ivangela Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 So if I have a 4K tv as a display for my PC, the max resolution would be 1080p because of the HDMI connection, right?
Fight Game Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) Edit: well I googled because I was 100% sure and they advised at least a version 1.4 or preferably a 2.0 hdmi in order to get to 4k, but then there's this https://www.cnet.com/news/4k-hdmi-cables-are-nonsense/ Edited April 2, 2017 by Fight Game
ivangela Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Does that then mean that if i don't have the option to increase the resolution that my video card is the culprit? I read that cnet article and I have brand new High speed HDMI cables form amazon, the ones referred to in the article, but I don't have an option to increase the resolution of the output from the video card. It is an old card but I don't know if that's the reason. I'm not gaming on it, just trying to up the screen resolution.
Braegnok Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) Your EN9500GT card is the culprit,.. the max it will stream is 2560X1600. Be best for running a new 4K panel to upgrade to a GTX 1050 for under $120,.. even a low-profile card if needed for your HTPC will have HDMI 2.0 & Display-port 1.4 and will stream 7680X4320. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137079 Edited April 2, 2017 by Braegnok
Waco Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 HDMI 2.0 is all you need for 4K @ 60 Hz. Your older card doesn't support it, though.

Not that the current card is better, but it's a HD 5450. In the past I've just wanted something to play blurays and such. Now with the new TV I wanted to up the resolution. You think it is the culprit? Regardless of the card's connectivity, the TV only has HDMI and USB, so Display-port is irrelevant isn't it? The HD 5450 arrived before HDMI 2.0 did, so yeah, it's the main issue.
ivangela Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Thanks all. I'll have to see what I can do. The HTPC case is too small for even the 7770 I have. I'll look around to see what is out there. What's the minimum I need for 4K, in terms of card newness? Would the 7770 even be capable? Thanks again.
Braegnok Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 (edited) The 5450 is 2560X1600 max,.. I'm not sure if the 7770 is 4K capable,.. I think the HDMI is version 1.4a, and the display ports are version 1.2 If size is an issue you could go with older Asus GTX 950 Mini if you can find one,.. or the low-profile AMD RX 460 would work for under $100. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137089 Edited April 3, 2017 by Braegnok
ivangela Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 (edited) Both the 5450 and 7770 are 2560X1600 max,.. you could go with older Asus GTX 950 Mini for $140 if you can find one,.. or the low-profile AMD RX 460 under $100. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137089 Why am I not getting the option in AMD Vision to increase what they call the "Desktop Area" to a resolution above 1920x1080, nor if I right click_screen resolution, the slider maxes out at 1080p. I dont have the option of increasing it. You're saying I should get 1660. Edited April 3, 2017 by ivangela
