Jozhogg Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi, I've recently built a new pc with an amd phenom ii processor. I got the X2 so I could (hopefully) unlock and it did. Unfortunately, as I'm on the AMD stock dual core cooler, it overheats as a a quad core. I plan to invest in an new cooler but I was wondering also about what kind of temperatures I would get with a moderate overclock? Seeing as there's no way of monitoring the temperature of the cpu when it's unlocked I wouldn't want to run any risk with temperature damage. What increases in temperature can I expect? Any suggestions as to how good/ what cooler I should get? Regards, Joseph
potatochobit Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 install hwmonitor what are your temps at idle and under load?
Waco Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 install hwmonitor what are your temps at idle and under load? AMD chips don't report temperatures correctly when cores are unlocked.
IVIYTH0S Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I'm confused, so you want to know what temps you'll get OC'd...as a dual core with the stock cooler??

Me too...I was thinking he wanted ideas of how hot the quad would run with a decent heat sink.

Jozhogg Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I apologise for not being clearer. Waco is correct, I was more wondering how hot it could get as a quad with a decent cooler

Waco Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I apologise for not being clearer. Waco is correct, I was more wondering how hot it could get as a quad with a decent cooler It depends entirely on the cooler you choose and how you overclock (voltage, frequency, etc). Jozhogg Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Thanks, I'm aware that the temperature will depend largly on the cooler. My concern is more about how much the actual overclock is likely to add to the temperatures? Seeing as I won't be able to monitor them I'm trying to find roughly the kind of temperatures I'll be getting?
IVIYTH0S Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I would just get the best cooler you can afford and find out, how much money would you have to dedicate to it's purchase?
potatochobit Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 once you hit 1.45 voltage your temperatures will begin to sky rocket you can expect 50-60degree at full load with a great aftermarket heatsink which is still safe I would stop here but you can go higher if you wish
