iskout Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Building a rig for a friend of mine for his 18th birthday. He's putting $1,000 in, and I'm gonna pay for shipping for him. newegg wishlist I convinced him to get 4GB of DDR3 instead of 8GB, since we could get better RAM, and he wouldn't notice any difference anyway. malmsteenisgod Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I always like to suggest an SSD with any new computer these days, so have a look around for one of those. Also instead of getting 2 x 500GB hard drives you could go with a 1TB hard drive for much cheaper. $55 after $10 promo code if used by 1/19 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148433
bobby898 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Really nice build. Cannot push $50 more for a 6870, it would be worth it. Personally i prefer ocz over antec plus that power supply was unsleeved, really does improve the looks loads. Try this ocz 700w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341040&cm_re=ocz-_-17-341-040-_-Product Is your friend planning on overclocking? Performance wise, he's going to put them in RAID 0. He has a 1.5TB external for storage and backups, so he'll be fine. I have an OCZ Power Supply, but for the price, you can't really beat that Antec right now. Yes, it would look nicer if it were sleeved, but I can just get some heatshrink and do it myself for him. SpeedCrazy Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 but I can just get some heatshrink and do it myself for him. It is aloooooot of work. But worth it it the end.
iskout Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 (edited) It is aloooooot of work. But worth it it the end. oh, I know. I had to do it for a guy's 850w PSU. He paid me $50, and I STILL almost blew him off. That said, He probably won't even have me do that lol. He'll just zip tie the wires in key places after we wire it up. It'll stay nice and clean. DexRain Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I can vouch for the PSU, at least performance-wise, it powers my 965BE, a 6870, 5 HDD's, and all the fans in my 1200 without a problem, and since the 6850 only draws 127 watts of power you may be able to crossfire them later on with that psu
Alexandre Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Overall the build looks great. Your friend will absolutely love that i5 2500k and will probably go The power supply is fine. It's reliable and has a good wattage level. I'm guessing your friend already has all the cosmetics like a screen, mouse, keyboard, etc?
