New Overclocker

Hello. I have tried overclocking before, and it worked. but now i have a completely new system, and frankly, i have forgotten how.

i do remember that this is a great place to get help and so i thought id ask here.

 

My system specs:

Case: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP

RAM: 6 GB of assorted memory in 4 sticks; 2x2GB and 2x1GB

EDIT: Its all DDR2

(not sure of the models and make as i cant really take my RAM out as im writing this :S but ill edit later)

MOBO: ASUS P5QL-E

As far as case cooling goes i have 5x120MM fans (including those in the V6) and 1 80mm (i believe thats the measurement)

the picture shows the airflow of it. I have no fans on the side of my case as the V6 is too big and there isnt any space

So, right now my cores temps are 17degrees Celsius

And under a stress test from Orthos using Gromacs Core my temps go up to 32Celsius max.

 

anyways, basically what im looking for is How exactly to overclock this baby and how much i can overclock it.

so all help is appreciated, and Thanks.

I had an E4600 before, and it wasn't a fan of being overclocked. Try first just bumping up the FSB in your BIOS. I can't remember what the FSB for that is (800, iirc), but it might require more changes than just FSB. Try bumping the FSB up to about 900, and running a stress test (Prime95 is good). If it shows errors, try bumping up the vcore slightly. (.01-.02v) and re-running it.

Make sure you have a good quality power supply and I ain't an expert but your mixed bag of ram may not help?

If they are matched in size, then the board will automatically match the speed, timing and voltages to the worse of the two. This is a super inefficient way of doing it though, and should be avoided at all costs. Definitely not something I would overclock with, at least not more than 5-10%

You are using two different sets on two different "dual channels," and they all match in size and speed (the two most important metrics,) and they are both pretty nice RAM sets. I used to run a similar set up in a couple of my laptops for price reasons. If there were an okay way of doing it, your set up would be it.

So what im taking from this is that my RAM is crap. im thinking i should take out all but one of the 2 GB sticks, as both of the 2GB are mismatched.

Also i forgot to list my PSU; its A Cooler Master 460W which may not be enough for what i want to Overclock.

could you tell us the model number/s of the 2gb sticks? that would give us enough information to correctly guide you, but i believe running 2x2gb will be your best bet.
