dode74 Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Hey all I've been taking a look at my in-laws PC as they asked me to make it a bit faster. Having carried out the usual clean-up routine and seen that they had 256Mb of RAM I upgraded to 2Gb pretty much immediately and it's made a big difference. The next problem is the graphics card - it's an on-board 32Mb one which stumbles on web-pages, so it needs an upgrade. The mobo is a K7VM2 and CPUZ says it is AGP 2.0 (so 4x), and their PSU has no pare outputs. I can't find a 4x card anywhere, and I'm uncertain on backwards compatibility of newer cards. So, the question is this: can someone recommend a decent (7000 series nvidia type) card which is compatible with the mobo but doesn't need separate power supply? Thanks
nVidia_Freak Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 8x can run in a 4x slot and vice versa. You don't rightly need anything new to be good if your in-laws don't game, anything GeForce 3/8xxx series on up will do more than well enough. dode74 Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Would that not need a power supply?
RogerDeath Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Would that not need a power supply? This depends on what card you do end up getting. Always check photos of it to see if it requires the extra power. Also, quite a few graphics cards now days come with one Molex (4-pin) to 6-pin adapters so chances are you could get the best that is out for it. wevsspot Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Here's a whole page of available AGP cards - most of which don't require auxillary power plugs http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600007850&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=

davidst Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Great! Ordered the 8400GS PCI. Should arrive soon. Thanks all. You should have got an AGP card. That is the reason for the slot to begin with because pci is much slower. A Nvida 6200 AGP with 256 would have been perfect and cheap. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130465
