High Temperatures on Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus

Hi,

 

I'm getting high temperatures about 78 C on Cores ( Prime95 Small FFTs ).

 

- Intel Core i7 920 @ Stock Speed, Turbo Boost On, HyperThreading On

 

- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler

- Gigabyte X58A-UD3R

- OCZ Platinum 6GB 1600MHz CL7 DDR3 v1.65

- Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 1 GB (Reference Design)

- PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W Crossfire Edition

- Cooler Master HAF 922 Case

 

Tried to remount it twice, change thermal paste method, filled gaps between heat pipes with thermal paste then a small pea on CPU ( or 2 lines ), added another Fan Push Pull Method.

Nothing improved much.

 

I don't know if this CPU is just HOT (bad batch) or something is wrong because i didn't use the stock cooler, i can't compare.

But when i touched the top end of the heat pipes they were not HOT or Warm ( Under load 78 C on Cores ), can anyone who have the same cooler confirm if the top end of the heat pipes should be warm under Load or not.

Run CPU-z and post a screenshot of it, maybe your mobo is just setting the voltage way too high. Theres no way in the world you should get 78C at stock speeds with an aftermarket cooler. Also, try going back to the stock cooler and see if the problem truely is your heatsink.

the coolermaster 212 has 3 different position mounting holes and comes with 2 different back plates

 

do you have the pins in the correct position to be used with an intel 1366 board?

 

take a picture of the inside of your computer and close ups around the CPU

 

 

most likely the heatsink is not touching the CPU properly.

you install the back plate first, leave it a bit loose so it can be adjusted. then put the fan on where u want it and clamp down. should be super hard and tight. then you tighten the back side screws behind the mother board fully.

 

if you are using 2 fans, make sure they are both blowing the same way, not blowing at each other.

this is AMD though but similar

OH also did you take the sticker off the heatsink?

there is a clear plastic sticker that protects it in shipping

Yes, followed the manual directions and couple of YouTube installation videos.

 

you install the back plate first, leave it a bit loose so it can be adjusted. then put the fan on where u want it and clamp down. should be super hard and tight. then you tighten the back side screws behind the mother board fully.

 

Hyper 212 Plus use slightly different mounting system, but i did tighten everything and hoped motherboard don't break :D

 

if you are using 2 fans, make sure they are both blowing the same way, not blowing at each other.

 

Confirm both blowing same way

 

OH also did you take the sticker off the heatsink?

there is a clear plastic sticker that protects it in shipping

 

Hyper 212 Plus is Heatpipe Direct Touch, i removed the plastic sticker, and filled gaps between heat pipes with thermal paste.

I really think its a contact problem between your chip and your heatsink. To narrow it down and find what exactly is causing the problem, try using the stock cooler... if that doesnt make it better then maybe you're using too much thermal paste. Try using half of what you had been using and see how that does. If you still cant lower those temps, then RMA the chip, because theres NO way a 920 at stock voltage and frequency should get up to 78C under load.

I have a 212 plus but its on an AMD board

 

what do you mean you filled in the heat pipes?

there is no filling in anything

thermal paste is a super thin layer on the CPU, there is not other thermal paste that should be anywhere

 

as for your question, if your CPU is @78 without doubt the heatsink should be warm

 

now, your temps are not terribly bad if its under load

but if you are running stock voltage and timings and you have a haf922 with a coolermaster 212, I am inclined to think there is a problem

 

go ahead and exchange the heatsink as the others have suggested, but I want a pic of the thermal paste job you did when u remove the 212

A longer Prime95 Small FFTs test than the one i posted earlier.

Idle temperature is a bit higher, Load temperature looks the same.

 

Ohh also room temperature is about 30C

You know what... I dont see a single thing wrong with any of your setup or anything. The only last couple things I can think of is to ensure that the four fans you have all around the processor- your case fan, two heatsink fans, and then the upper large (140mm?) fan are all blowing the same direction, or at least not in conflicting directions. Past that, you may have to RMA your chip, because I really dont think those temps are normal.

I have the same cooler on mine, I ran prime 95 for you for 10minutes just to make sure everything got warm, got my core temp up to 67c and felt the top of the heat pipes and they only slightly warm to the touch. If yours feels clod I would considerate RMA'ing the cooler for a new one. Not the chip.

These are at overclocked setting with a core i5 btw putting out just under 150watts.

Well the reason I said RMA the chip is because he said the top end of the heatpipes are warm/hot. That means to me that theres more heat coming off the chip than the heatsink can dissipate, which shouldnt happen on a stock everything 920. But then again, if you're getting similar results with the stock cooler, then maybe theres some convex/concave issues with something... check how flat your processor is by putting a razor blade on it and seeing if you can see under the edge anywhere. Then do the same to your Hyper 212. If they're both flat, then imo its the chip thats the problem, but to be safe you could always RMA both of them.
