How much heat can the 4870 take?

Recommended Posts

I have a single slot version, which I regret buying now because it shoots hot air back into my case, so I keep my case open and my CPU cores aren't hot and are running under normal temps, but under load my GPU core tempature can hit around 95 c. with 100% fan speed.

My power supply is good too.

I know this is hot.. However all my other temperatures on my computer aren't hot and my case is open...

This only happens when I'm gaming in certain games like World at War and Call of Duty 4 with all graphics maxed out, the idle temp stays between 59c-64c no matter what speed the fan goes, even if the room is cold it will always hit that temperature.

Can this fry my video card? I know it shortens the life of my card, I'm fine with that.. I just don't want my card getting fried since it's pretty new.

What temperature can the 4870 handle?

Aftermarket cooler may be something I can get.. although I read sometimes this makes the card worse.. and I have no idea how to set one up.

Sounds a little high to me, but from the few articles I have read is that naturally the 4870 does generate a fair amount of heat. I would look into an aftermarket cooler but the only ones I have seen are for the dualie slot versions. Does your case suck out air out the top via a fan ? If so you may be able to use the right PCI slot cooler to help cool it down a little bit, this would be the cheapest solution I think..well actually it might not even be a solution but it might help :). I am sure other cases without the fan up top would do just fine, but IMHO I believe that the fan up top of the case would dissipate more heat.

No my case isn't like that.. But I don't know..the rest of my computer has normal tempatures.. its just around the card that gets so hot that it worries me.

Yep,

Agree with Waco. While not ideal those temps are safe. If you don't mind having an affordable aftermarket solution that still exhausts heat inside your case the Zalman VF900 will take care of those temps for you. Other wise you could look at more expensive solutions, unfortunately the majority of them still dont actively pipe the heat outside of your case.

Trust me - even the VF900 will make a substantial drop in your temps.

Mine routinely hits 100 C on the hotter GPU when gaming. It's nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not used to seeing these temps so they freak me out, you are so comfortable with it :P

I don't know much about coolers.. but I'll look into them.

The hottest mine has ever run is 80C. Idle it's at 60C. It usually only hits 75C while gaming.

Pick yourself up one of these....my 4870 doesn't ever get over 55c.

Thats a killer price as I payed over $50 for mine with 2 Yate Loons.
