Really? It might be true for AMD, and even then, DDR3 is barely more expensive now. However, what about an Intel i7 or even i5 build?

ya but I wouldn't recommend an i7 unless he had an abundance of wealth, naturally DDR3 would have to be purchased then (and would be the only time I'd advise it's use). Whether it'd is barely more expensive or vastly more expensive, more expensive is more expensive. There's simply no real world noticeable performance difference between a solid DDR2 system and a solid DDR3 (provided the socket/architecture still can run DDR2)
