longers Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) Hi. First of all bare in mind i am a complete noob to all this and this computer is my first build. I've got a problem with the temperature of my AMD Phenom II X4 BE 955. It seems to be running too hot. It's overclocked from 3.2ghz to 3.8ghz (by ocuk). When idle it constantly varies between 44-49 degrees and when under full load from playing games such as arma 2 it goes as high as the mid-late 60's ! im using HWmonitor to check the temps btw I have changed cases (had a case with 1 fan, now have a case with 3) and improved cable management but it has made no difference whatsoever. I have a Titan Fenrir cooler and im using MX-2 Thermal Paste. Im also a little confused as to how much paste i should be putting on and also how i should apply it. I hear so many conflicting ways on how much i should put on and how i should do it. I asked a member of the ocuk staff about the temperatures and he said "those temperatures are fine and what we expect to see in some circumstances i would personally reseat the titan fenrir using a lot of thermal paste as it needs a good helping to cover the contact plate" now this goes against everything iv read on forums. according to most websites the thermal limit for this cpu is only 62 degrees and im going over that regularly so surely the temps aren't fine ? Also people always say to put on a minimal amount of paste, but this guy is saying use a lot (maybe because the fenrir specifically requires it ???) I also phoned up AMD and the woman i spoke to said that the limit was 71 degrees and that my temps were ok although maybe a little too high. Then i have countless people on forums telling me that the temperature of the CPU is too high and the limit is actually 62. I honestly don't know who to believe... im so confused Im terrified im going to melt the cpu or something bad like that. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated oh and here is a picture of my setup so you can see if the airflow should be ok or not. There is a rear and front fan and also a panel on the side which you obviously can't see in the pic Edited June 25, 2009 by longers
hi6908 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Try turning the CPU fan and heatsink so the air is blowing towards the fan in the back.
tjmagneto Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) I wouldn't listen to those guys in regard to the themal paste. Here's the install instructions for the MX-2 Thermal Paste and it does not look like they use much. Zertz Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 For the Fenrir (and HDT coolers in general), I apply a line of thermal paste perpendicular to the heatpipes. That seems to work best with those kind of heatsinks because the gaps between the the base and the heatpipes don't get properly filled otherwise And yes, turn the heatsink 90 degrees so it blows toward the back
longers Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) hi, cheers for the responses sadly i can't turn the heatsink 90 degrees as it won't mount onto the motherboard that way, it can only blow upwards or downwards There is room in the case for a fan above it but i tried putting one there previously and it didnt seem to make any difference Edited June 25, 2009 by longers
hi6908 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Above it as in on the top of the case? An outtake should help there.

Have you tried remounting it with new thermal paste applied like I explained above?
longers Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Hi since posting i have re-applied the thermal paste using two seperate methods including how you explained. the temps have been more or less identicle no matter how i do it. i seem to remain idle at around 45-53 and then go into high 60's when under full load. i have tried moving the 3 fans about but it's made no difference i really have no idea why the temps are so high, when i touch the heatsink it doesn't feel particularly hot which makes me think maybe it's not doing its job ? also there seems to be zero airflow out the rear fan, it doesnt really seem to do anything i even increased the speed of all the fans and instead of temps going down they went up !!!!! it seems like everything i do either makes no difference or makes things worse <_<
OwinC Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Is the fan in the back of the case blowing out? Or is it blowing back into the case.
Zertz Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 (edited) Is the fan in the back of the case blowing out? Or is it blowing back into the case. This, you want the rear fan to blow air out. Now that you've mounted the heatsink a few times without much more success, it really seems like you have airflow issues. Where are the case's other fans? Which makes me think, is the Titan fan pushing air through the heatsink or pulling air form the top? longers Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 maybe i should get a better cpu cooler ???
