LivingGhost Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 My computer has finally decided to die. My RDX200 just...failed. And now it won't post. I've tried multiple things, but I am done with this POS. Problems since day 1. So, this is what I'm thinking: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail DFI LP UT X58-T3eH8 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail 2x G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail Are there better motherboards/RAM out there that I should be looking at? All my knowledge is from the Athlon days, so I'm really not sure what the makeup of a good i7 rig is. :\ Is my PSU powerful enough? Thanks, as always! DLS2008 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I don't think you need 12 GB of RAM. That's overkill for right now. Just get one of those kits. Also, if you happen to have a Micro Center near you, they have the Core i7 920 for $229.99, but it's for in-store pick up only. LivingGhost Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) I do a lot of photoshop manipulation of extremely large photos (>1gig), and a decent amount of video editing. Maybe I'll start with 6. Also, I just read a Techgage article that pretty much said to go for faster RAM over RAM with lower CAS latency because that will improve performance more. So maybe G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail or something. I'm not married to G.Skill or DFI, I'll use whatever is best. Edit: Oh, the 920 is locked at DDR3-1066. Edited February 26, 2009 by LivingGhost

scr4wl Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Edit: Oh, the 920 is locked at DDR3-1066. I'm not sure where you heard that but no it is not. Some motherboards will default the RAM at 1066 but you can easily go in and change it to the correct speeds.
LivingGhost Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Oh, ok then. I read it on a site from November 2008. So, 920 paired with what for around $800? I'm at a loss, I don't know what's good.
LivingGhost Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Can anyone else please chime in? I need to buy this by tomorrow, I really need a powerful PC back up and running. What mobo, processor, and RAM would you get for around $800? Anyone? Thanks in advance...
IVIYTH0S Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 check around on review sites, or even on some of our reviews here I don't keep tabs on DDR3 or x58 boards because they're overpriced to me (no offense) but that's what I'd do unless someone else can shed light on this
LivingGhost Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Understandable. And I'd agree, but the X58 and i7 combo is just way, way too tasty to pass up. I'm somewhat annoyed that they've forced us into DDR3, but, whatever.

LivingGhost Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 No, and sorry if my language was a bit awkward. I just mean that I've been wanting i7 for a long, long time. Here is my newegg wishlist, I guess: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWi...Number=11243826
Kingfisher Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 With $800 to work with I would get an I7 I suppose. Intel Core i7 920$280 shipped GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R $200 shipped plus $15 mir. OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB)$131 shipped plus $40 mir. Totals $611 plus $55 in rebates. I'm not too sure if that RAM's speed is correct, might want another with an i7 set-up to confirm. You also could do well with AMD's /AM2+/AM3 or a 775 Intel set-up for a few hundred less and still have a very strong PC.
