bcbooter Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 anyone using linux through VmWare in windows? I find it very convenient for switching between gaming, and using linux.. I just use windows for proprietary software and music(better quality), and do some stuff and browsing/tinkering in linux.
Bill_v Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Yes. I've used a few distros over the past couple of years. I set them up in the free VMWare server. I found I got better GUI response by converting the VM to an Appliance, and then running the appliance in VMWare Player.

Bill_v Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I am interested .... Could you give a download link and maybe a quick explanation on how to do that ? Thanks First, download the following three products. They are free downloads: (1) VMWare Server http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ (2) VMWare Converter http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/ (3) VMWare Player http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ IIRC the order went something like this: Install (1). Install the OS (Linux, Windows Whatever, or DOS, etc) on a new VM. Install (2), and convert the VM file into a "VMWare Appliance". Uninstall (1), and then install (3) You should be able to run the newly-created appliance using the VMWare Player. I've listed uninstall steps because I could only have a certain combination of these products installed at one time. I can't remember the exact limitation, but I definitely could not have Server and Player installed at the same time.

Thanks for the info ! I may not have got the order of operations exact, but it was close to that. You can run the VMs using VMWare Server - I just found I got better performance with Player when I wanted to use the VM for "desktop-like" situations. If you want to run use the VM as a server, then it's of course better to stick with VMWare Server.
Guest InFeKtioN Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Holy Moly ... how much stuff do you have to install to setup a VM ? I just cannot seem to get connected to the "host". error after error. Trying to run it on the laptop..... All I want to do is test out some Win XP Slipstream ISO's .....maybe I should just stick with VirtualPC, but its just so damn bloated and slow. Any other suggestions ?
