    Windows Xp Sp3

Over the past day I've installed SP3 on the two machines in my signature. After a defrag, I don't see much difference in performance; I haven't done any benchmarks as yet. As for stability it's so far, so good.
  3. The SMP client periodically attempts to send unsent WU's while working. It should upload eventually. I had a similar thing happen to me last month with a 2619 WU.
  4. Athlon64 3500+ Xeon E3110 as in sig Dell P4 2.0 ghz Tandy 1000SX with RAM upgraded to 640K, DOS 3.30 Pentium-200 with 64 MB RAM running DOS 6.22 and WFW 3.11 Compaq Prolinea 4/66 with Pentium Overdrive 83 mhz running Windows 95
  5. I'll try the USB key method on my A64 system once I stop procrastinating and put it back together (de-lid + install some kind of bolt-through cooler)
  6. For a folding-only VM, I installed a minimal Debian text-only setup, using the 40mb (business card cd-size) image located here: http://www.debian.com/distrib/netinst#verysmall I had a theory that forgoing any graphics on the VM could help free up more CPU power to crank out the WUs faster, and use less memory. I haven't used a GUI installation as a comparison, so I can't really say if there's any real advantage. I can say that the VM boots very fast using this setup.
  7. For me, Real Temp and Core Temp seem to read temperatures consistently - the difference is Core Temp considers the TjMax to be 105, while Real Temp uses TjMax at 95, meaning my temperatures are off by 10 degrees between the two (at idle and load). If I display the Delta to TjMax on either app, they're identical at roughly 50 degrees below the TjMax at load. As for which I trust between TjMax 105 or 95, I suppose if I go with a worst-case scenario then my temps are doing OK. But as wevsspot said there's no way I'm running a bare CPU to calibrate the temps myself...
  8. You may want to give this one (EVGA 8800GT) here serious consideration, especially after the rebate brings the price down to $159.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130318 If I had waited 3 more weeks to build my system I would have grabbed this one.
  9. It's stock @ 3 GHZ. I think the Virtual Extension support on the CPU and motherboard are helping it out. EDIT: I'm also not running it 24/7 so I'll probably get a WU every 2-3 days.
  10. I started using the SMP client on my new rig. I'm running a fairly minimal (text only) Debian Linux install as a VMWare guest OS, and getting just under 11 minutes per % on the 2605 WUs.
  11. It's put together and wow is this thing fast or what! I'm impressed by how near-silent the Corsair PSU is! The cores run at 47 and 49 celsius running dual prime according to Real Temp, with the Zalman fan controller set at just under 50% throttle. If I research more and find that those temps are a bit high, I'll speed the fan up - at the moment I'm enjoying the novelty of a quiet system. I won't be OC'ing this for the time being. Thanks again everyone for their feedback.
  12. With Bloodmoon installed, the Morrowind Graphics Extender allows for a non-clipped ("infinite") viewing distance: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View...es.Detail&id=45 A lot of people like the enhanced texture pack: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View....Detail&id=2915 I reinstalled Morrowind late last year, and played it for the better part of a month before getting sidetracked.
  13. Yup, that is what I was alluding to (not wanting to RMA something I torched from overclocking it). I didn't OC my 3500+ until the prices had dropped by $100+, since by then I could more easily eat the replacement cost if I ruined it.
  14. I've placed the order with a store nearby, and should have this stuff early next week. I made one change - ordered an Antec Sonata 3 instead of the CM 690. It's got worse cooling I realise, but there are some reasons I won't get in to here as to why I went with that one. Plus I can use the supplied Earthwatts 500 in my parents' Athlon64 build as a replacement. I still went with the Corsair HX620 PSU. As for as OC goes, this machine will probably stay at stock for at least a year. I need to use this for some work applications, and at 3 GHz it will be much faster than my current rig. Heck I am impressed with my E6300 at work, and that's running @1.86. My view on volt modding etc is that it's definitely a "to each his own" kind of thing, but my own view (and this is just my own view) is that I'd feel funny trying to RMA something I knowingly invalidated the warranty on. Thanks to everyone for their feedback!
  15. Thanks! I learned my lesson after building my 939 machine. If I had known about the street ahead of time, I could have avoided a couple of pitfalls off the bat (knowing the difference between a decent PSU and a lousy one, knowing ahead of time you need good RAM on an NF4 lanparty etc). Lesson learned, so I figured it's good to read posts from people that know what they are doing far more than I do, so I can try and get appropriate stuff on the first try. Which meant lurking the heck out of diy-street for the past 3.5 months, heheh.
  16. Yup, I did see the EVGA step-up program. I plan on getting this stuff at a shop down the street, since they have good prices and they have a record of good service with me. It came down to the price being better on the XFX at this store. I can say "what's $25 bucks", but it all adds up. Not to say I couldn't be tempted to go for the EVGA.
  17. Greetings, all! I've been mulling over getting a new system for some time now; I've been reading tons and tons of posts on diy-street, and researching and trying to get an idea of what a well-balanced system might look like. Since I'm not a rich guy, I'm not looking to get the most uber parts - at the same time I want to get good value for my money, with stable components that will work well together. Here's what I've specced out. If anyone has any suggestions, or sees any glaring bad choices (or if I've forgotten something critical), please feel free to holler. The last Intel system I built was a Pentium 166, so it's been a while. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks! Here goes...: CPU: Intel Dual-Core Xeon E3110 / 3GHz (1333MHz) CPU Cooler: Zalman 9700LED http://www.zalman.co.kr/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=164 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Gigabyte website says it's compatible with the Xeon above) http://www.giga-byte.com/Products/Motherbo...?ProductID=2749 Case: Cooler Master CM 690 http://www.coolermaster.com/products/produ...=detail&id=2908 PSU: Corsair HX620 http://www.corsair.com/products/hx.aspx RAM: OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memo..._2_dual_channel Video Card: XFX PV-T88P-YDF4 Geforce 8800GT 512MB http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product/listCo...ationId=1558705 Optical: LITEON 20X20 DVDRW SATA (20A1S-15) Hard Drives: 2 x Western Digital 320GB CAVIAR SATA II 7200 RPM 16MB OS: XP Pro 32-bit
  18. Is there a "Source" button somewhere on the monitor? Maybe you have to manually switch between VGA/DVI.
  19. By APXApire do you mean Aspire? If so, you might want to refer to these two postings: http://diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php?p=760618 http://diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php...hlight=psu+list Based on the recommendation of those two gentlemen, I would not go near one. On the "PSU to avoid" post, the Aspire even has the honour of boldfacing to serve as an extra warning.
  20. I was thinking about how growing up would have differed had D&D not been invented when it was. No Ultima V, Might and Magic I-V, Wizardry, Hero's Quest, Lands of Lore, etc.... not to even mention Baldur's Gate. If not for those titles, my interest in PCs might have been far lower than it turned out to be.
  21. I remember one of my favourite things about Windows 95 was the built-in dial-up networking with TCP/IP, PPP, etc.. support, so you didn't have to mess around with Trumpet Winsock dialer or any crap like that to get anything useful done on the Internet. Before Win95, I used WFW 3.11 at work, but at home used DOS for 80+% of the stuff I did (games, programming assignments, word processing, BBS's [lol]). I loaded win.com when I had something Windows-specific to do, and at the time that didn't include too much.
  22. I had a Dual CS-506 (1981-ish model) turntable that served me well for quite a few years before I got a new Rega deck. The site here has a few details about it: http://www.dual-reference.com/tables/cs506-1.htm The Dual had very nice sound. If you can find a nice CS-505 or CS-506 for a good price, you might want to give it a listen (assuming you are interested in getting in to vinyl). The only problem with the Dual was that the pitch control had an elastic band in the mechanism that tended to crack and break, so fine-tuning the pitch involved a bit of manual work (tightening/loosening a bolt under the platter with a ratchet). The replacement elastics at the time were too expensive, so when I switched from 45 to 33 RPM records, I had to make a small adjustment like that.
  23. That happened to me almost two years ago, and then eventually the PC would not power on at all. It was a dying power supply that turned into a dead power supply. I brought the PC to a local shop, asked the guy if he could try another PSU, and it fired up immediately.
  24. If you're talking about the links I posted, I was not responding/referring to you at all - I was responding to the original poster. Looking back at your postings on gun control, I'm not in a position to agree or disagree given where I'm from (meaning a life time where I do not understand what it means to have a right to bear arms). That said, it did make me think back to something that happened here in 1970 called the "October Crisis", where something called the "War Measures Act" was temporarily activated - this meant seizure and jail for anyone with no questions asked. This could happen again, and not many here people think about it, but it does leave me uneasy. By "apathy" I also was not meaning anyone in this thread.
