Looking to loose about 5C or better

Recommended Posts

That title sounds like something from weightwatcher's. Anyway I have a new Opty-170 and it is running a little hot im just not used to seeing a 35C at idle and would like to get down to about 30 or so. My OC is ok I guess but im running a Thermalltake extreme valcano 12 on high Im also running the core volt's at 1.45 at 104% at 9X311 at 2.8Gig even when I cut it back to 2.6 Gig and reduce the voltage to 1.40 reg is 1.35 it still has that 35C idel. So the thermalltake valcano 12 im running is about 3 years old. And it's louder than all get out

Is there a better air heatsink and fan so I can get this thing down to about 30 or so. My 2X4200 ran about 26/27C at idel at 1.55 at 2.7. My stepping is either LCBQE/or LCB9E my eyes arnt that good anymore I guess im getting old. Any suggestion's would be apreachated. BA

Tuniq Tower is one of the best out there for air-cooling.

Other factors such as case air flow and obstructions such as cables and wiring inside the case will affect your cpu cooler's ability.

35c at idle is not too bad actually, I'd be more concerned about your load temps, keeping them below 50c.

That's kind of where I like to run, Ive had this lanparty Mb for 2 year's and I have it in a full sized Chen Ming with 2X80 in back and 2X80 in the front and a 120 ajustable in the side my one case mod. These cases are the same size as the Thermaltake 4 bayer's. The only thing cutting down airflow is the video card that's why I placed in the larger 120 outside of that no wires in the way to speak of this case has had about 5 or 6 MB's in it and probubly 8or 10 cpu's in it. My idea is If I loose 5 on the bottom Ill loose 5 on the top Im just looking for any improvement in air fan driven heatsink.

Man Ive never seen a cpu heat up this fast. As im typeing this to you I just dropped down to 2.5Gig and 1.40 vcore and im still sitting on 35 if anybody know's about a better heatsink please let me know, im useing AC-5 like allway's had to buy a new tube. If you can put link's to the better Heatsink-fan combos. From what im hearing the the easier self contained water setup's dont work much better than what I allready have. And im not ready to build a professional setup. Anyway thanks. BA

You could buys some after market TIM like AS5 that would get you down with 2-3 degrees buying a Tuniq Tower will also buy you like 7 degrees.Making a wire-management and installing an intake fan to make the airflow optimal may also gain you some temp. drop. Also you could get rid off the IHS and also gain some degrees.May I ask what is the temperature in the house?YOu won't get below room temperature

The Air is saying 76F at the moment im allready useing ArticSilver 5 I havent laped this stuff yet but ive never had to before and I used to run my 2X4200 at 2.8 all the time while gaming and ide set it back to 2.6 for amy 24/7 running and is the tuniq tower that much better than a Valcane Extreme 12 from thermaltake

I dont mind spending money I just hate to spend money and not notice any difference. I gained 5 to 7 C switching from the Opty 170 heat pipe HS. You probubly know about those HSfans they send you with the retail processor's.

I bought a 2X4400 last week and destroyed it removing the IHS on the top of the thing. Im not sure how I did my 2X4200 ok. that thing was a piece of junk it wouldent do better than 2,5Gig without crashing. So no im not going to try cutting this one at the moment im 1for2 . I may try installing some better case fan's the ones im useing now arnt anything to wright home about. I push from the front and side to the back like I always have. BA

if you use the right amount of AS5 and evenly spread it that can take off 2-3, but only if you have thuroughtly cleaned all thermal paste off. Lapping your HS can also take a good amount off. I lapped mine and got ~7 degrees off. You need to have ALLOT of patience, buy one of the kits, and set aside three hours and you can prolly get even more off

My Tuniq idles around 30, on the hot core. When it's cooler in here it goes even lower. If the ambient temperature is low 60s (68 F is 20 C), it'll idle just above 20, and will actually idle mid-20s passively.

I also lapped the Tuniq and the Opty.

It's clocked to 2250 at 1.4V right now.

I've had it clocked higher but for some reason it would not boot unless the RAM divider was set to 1/02, and having your RAM running at DDR312 is not good for performance no matter what your CPU is clocked to.
