7950gt Vs. 7900gtx

Recommended Posts

Just make sure to get a 512MB card, and you'll be happy. The 7950 is better, just not by a huge margin. I'd take a 512 7900 over a 256 7950, but a 512 7950...go for it, hehe.

The 7950GT is a downclocked 7900GTX. It would all depend on the actual card you ended up with and how well it clocked for one to be better than the other.

Most of the 7950's ship with a rather weak cooling solution that only covers the GPU so for seriously clocking that will need to be corrected. The GTX comes with a decent cooler but they can always be improved on.

For me it would come down to whether I had already intended to replace the factory cooling and what kind of deal I could get on either card.

EDIT: Grab the GTX if you can get it for 175.

For $175............me too.

Me three.

Anyways What I wonder is why the 7950GT's sell for so much cheaper the the 7900GTX's

Also I thought the 7900 cards had alot of issues. Was that drivers or hardware issues?

no issues for me, running two Forsa 7900GTXs and wish I'd got them for $175 each! over $400 I spent on them...

Weren't the 7950GTs the 7900GTXs that weren't stable enough at stock speeds so they underclocked them and "marketed" them as a new card?

My best guess is the 7900GTXes cost more because they're not being made, and feature the bigger heatsink... if I could find a 7900GTX for $175, I'd jump on it.

@ Unknown: The 7900GTO's were the cards that had the flaky memory, I believe. Lots of people got the memory up to the stock 800 of a GTX, though.

I'd stick with the GTX.

Remember the issues with the 7900s were mostly on the GT side. And of course, the 8800GTS 320 is a better buy if you can pull it off. :)

But that was the 7900GT's, not the 7950GTs.

Definately go with a 7900GTX if you can, my 7950GT struggles to get 640 core were as the 7900GTX is 650 stock plus better memory.

Both cards are very good for gaming still, I don't think they should be overshadowed by the 8800's, you can get them at a nice price point.
