jelly Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I think that my hard drive is dying!!!! It is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3120827AS 120GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM. Today I was running a set of 3dmark's 03,05,06 and heard a sound comming from my hard drive like a dvd loading, it would wind up and then stop 5sec to 1min and it would start winding up and then stop... I also have another Drive just like it in raid 0. I dont know how to find the bad drive without lossing my windows install?
Guest thespin Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I hope you have backup because if you lose one drive in a RAID0 array you lose all info. Maybe you can run Seagate's utility and check the HDs individually ...
mihkail Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 seagates are prone to breaking, i think the 80gb is worst. i have heard of it happening 3 times already, i wish i wouldve known that before i bought mine. the longest i have heard of my hdd lasting is 1 year and i bought this hdd in January this year so i probably have at most 3 months left on it if its a bad one. so im in the same boat

Guest erico Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 HI. The Seagate Barracuda drives have S.M.A.R.T. reporting. If you happen to have Everest Home on your system just use the S.M.A.R.T. reporting feature on each of your hard drives. That should let you know how your drives are doing. If you are hearing strange system noises and wish to isolate them use something insulated (plastic rod or so) and solid and place it on the suspect drive and listen. General Septem Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 If you do need to get a new drive, use Acronis True Image to clone your current array. Then you won't have to reinstall anything. I used it when I replaced my old PATA hard drive. When I booted back up, everything was exactly the same. Nothing had changed except I had twice the storage on my primary drive and no noise. It's a convenient program. All you have to do is put your new drive in (keep your old array in too), boot up, and run the program. Choose clone. You don't have to pre partition the drive at all. I thought that the current RAID stuff, you can't monitor SMART? You are forced to disconnect the drive from the array, and then check it with whatever SMART utility you want. Or is that for drive temps only? Or is this a issue of the past? SMART should be enabled in BIOS also...
jelly Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I do have S.M.A.R.T. on my dives but with the drives in raid windows looks at the drives as one. I am going to wipe the drives clean and check both drives by them selfs. The drives that I have are OEM would I still have a warranty on them? The drives are 1 1/2 years old.
