ReaperD Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Hi I am helping my friend build a decent computer. It needs to run Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. It currently has nothing besides a hard drive that can run Oblivion. I need some suggestions on what to buy and some links. He has about a 200$ budget > (Also I need a processor for myself. I just had a AMD64 3700 ((can't believe I remember that)) and it misteriously overheated and now it no longer works. Please help me as well as my friend Thank you.) red930 Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 It all depends on which Resolution and game settings your friend feels comfortable with. If he doesn't care that much and wants to run smooth then a MID-RANGE video card might cut it for him. Either way i'm not sure if you can buy a decent processor, ram, video card, motherboard, under $500 now and days. He can save some money on sound card and use the on-board sound that comes with a motherboard, but he'll need an optical drive, a powersupply as well. I don't think $500 is enough. Maybe someone has a better idea.... Why don't you invest in a Dual Core processor, preferbly an Opteron 165 with a good stepping (0610) which can overclock very high with less voltages so it doesn't get that hot. I usually shop at Monarchcomputers.com because they don't tax you as long as you don't live in their location (Georgia) or Newegg.com. I hope this helps

vargis Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 ok with 400$ you cant get much to run oblivion smoothly, you say he has a hardrive,Need abit more information on what you need, power supply?????? how much video card do you want,........im pretty much clueless on what you need,as for your cpu with a possible friedcpu...are you sure the cpu is dead and not the powersupply??? ANyway newegg and monarch computers is where i buy all my hardware....both have good cust support......also check www.cyberpowerinc.com they have some pretty good deal on prebuilt systems that wont break your wallet. But with conroe otw i would wait.....if you dont get a conroe cpu ya night be interested in possibly a single core p4 or dual core since the prices will be dropped with the conroe release up to 60+ %
jawatrader Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I wish I could help, but I havent played oblivion yet and dont know what the requirements are for it. I just dont see you being able to build a good rig for anywhere near that budget. My vid card alone costs more than that. Would it be possible for him to wait a little while so he can save up some $$$. I would hate for him to go out and get the bare minimum required just to have to upgrade again in 6 months. Just a thought.

the_PC_Chef Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Pentium d 805 from zipzoomfly.com 123.20: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...st=pricegrabber Abit NI8 SLI from tigerdirect.com (its was 49.99 the other day, just check slickdeals.net because they seem to have promotions for it often): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...OcxUNkoRUBwS6wQ 1GB (2x512) DDR2 667 OCZ GOLD from newegg.com, for 96.99 and there's a rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820227046 EVGA 7600GT, 175.52 from pagecomputer.com: http://www.pagecomputers.com/store/product...ct%5Fid=1051839 This setup will leave some room for overclocking, but your gonna need a decent power supply. dab Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 For that amount of money, especially if he already has a PC with a decent hard disk, he might look at the XBOX360. Not that' I'm saying building a gaming pc isn't possible for that amount, but the XBOX 360 is pretty good performance for that amount of money, and will likely trounce a $400 computer.
