AMD Athlon X2 3800+ OC Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi People!

First I want to say: "Hi All!" becouse I'm new here.

I read the A64 Definitive Overclocking Guide, and it really helped my quite a lot, but I still have some problems:

I know people, from other forums, who are able to clock there X2 3800+'s to ~2.9GHz... This is an insane speed! And I loved to reach something like that, so i bought my new system... As you can read in my signature:

DFI LanPary NF4 Ultra-D

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ @ 2.74GHz

2x512MB GEIL PC4000

Maybe you are thinking something like, what are you whining about? 2.74GHz, that a great speed! -Sure it is! But, that 2.9GHz, or something like ~2.85GHz would make me really happy!

I tried some things, like loosening the memory timing, dropping the memory divider (even tried DDR200) but that doesn't really make difference...

Could it be possible I just hit my "max"?

If you need more details on my memory timings, or other settings, please let me know!

Thanks in advance people, an oh... Sorry for the long post

Take Care!

Rik

Hi Gipse, thanks for your response!

I have the V-Core on 1.55Volts, but setting it to 1.64, or even 1.88 doesn't make any difference... I use the CoolerMaster CPU Only Watercooling

(Mini Aqua Gate)

Like I said, I'm pretty happy with these speeds, but you know, maybe with some pro advice I'll get it a few MHz higher...

Rik,

First….Welcome to the Street. You came to the right place for support on your DFI motherboard and your OC challenge.

I'm curious what temps do you get at “1.64v or even 1.88v”. Which IMO are not recommended! Over volts does make a difference in the death of your CPU. It is just as quickly to kill your CPU with over volts as it is with over heating. You’re running water cooling so you’re conscience about temps. Why not be conscience about over volts?

Duel core can be more challenging to over clock and unfortunately you may never get there. Are you stable at 2.74Ghz? Keep reading and searching

Here is some more good reading about temps. Temps Too High?

Hi tasr!

Thanks for the welcome ;)

My temps were also pretty good (if I say so myself) at high voltages, like 1.64 or even 1.88v never came above 45 degrees Celcius... But I found out my system don't like high voltages anyways, when I take it above 1.7v, no matter what speed, sometimes I just get instant hangs... No BSOD, no system lag, just instant hang...

By the way, what you are trying to tell me is that -- even on low temps -- over volting is also "killing" my CPU faster than normal?

My PC is "rock-solid" at 2.74GHz... (12+ hours @ Prime95 Blend Torture)

My temps @ 1.55v are:

Idle: 28 Celcius

Load: 34 Celcius

Thank you for your time!

Rik

By the way, is there anyone on this forum who also owns an X2 3800+, I'd like to know their OCs...

Another by the way... What is an good stepping for the X2 3800+ , mine is:

Family: F

Ext. Family: F

Model: B

Ext. Model: B

Stepping: 1

Revision: BH-E4

(according to CPU-Z)

I've seen someone with exact the same (Ext.) Family, (Ext.) Model, Stepping and Revision hit 2.9GHz...

Priming 2.76GHz now, I just changed some timings... t.b.h I'm really getting sick of that... ;)

Lol, seems I am the only one still posting this thread... Anyway, for the readers (and I hope helpers):

CPU:

2.76GHz @ 1.55v

Memory:

250.9 MHz (DDR500) -- So this must be Ok...

CPU/1.1

CAS#: 2.5

RAS to CAS: 4

RAS Precharge: 3

TRAS: 0

Bank Cycle Time: 12

DRAM Ilde Timer: 32

Command Rate: 1T

Prime95 fails @ 19 minutes

Also tried 2T, don't seem to make much of a difference... Can anyone please give me some advice?
