Opteron 146 IHS removal results

I just wanted to post my results here for others to see if they're contemplating the removal of their own IHS.

 

I have my CPU at 290x10 @ 1.5V (according to bios it's 1.48 and CPU-Z says it's only 1.472) currently and when my CPU had the IHS on my idle temperature was around 38C and my load temperature could rise up to 46-50C which was unacceptable with my water cooling solution. This didn't seem right to me at all so I finally got myself a very thin single-edged razor and followed Angry Games' video tutorial to the letter to remove the IHS. Upon removal the first thing I noticed was that the IHS was making very poor contact as only 50-60% of the core had any grease on it. I cleaned everything up and popped it all in and I'm running SuperPI as I type this and my load temperature is going back and forth between 37 and 38 Celcius. Idling is around 31-32C now as well. This 9-11 Celcius drop is truely amazing to me.

 

If you don't mind voiding your warranty and you think your temps are a touch too high then I recommend you get a hold of AG's video tutorial for IHS removal and give it a go yourself. I'm going to see if I can get this Opteron past my 2.9ghz wall and I'll update with my results later tonight.

 

*Update* I have successfully run through SuperPi to 32M and a test cycle of OCCT at 300x10 with 1.55 vcore and my load temps were topping out at 42C. This was not possible before and I'm wondering just how much further I can take this chip.

Ooh i'm really tempted to take flip the lid off my opty too. Temps are high and i know it's cos of poor contact between core and ihs.

Could I get a link to that video for archival purposes?

 

I did manage to pry the IHS off my 4400+ that died when I pushed it to 1.52V for 18+ hours, but it was after I had killed it, and I literally broke the chip doing it. I'm assuming you used something better than a rusty exacto knife and a screwdriver, though.

Removing an IHS and using it on air is sorta risky. It only makes sense to use naked chips on water..

 

Btw arfett, what a coincidence, even I have a 0603FPMW ;) . Waiting for my TT-BT to arrive and will posts results then !

If removing the IHS and using HSF that "clip on" to the stock bracket, the BRACKET must be modified.

 

The little pegs on the underside of the top bracket have to be removed, so the plane of the HSF is lowered to match the lowered position of the IHS-less core.

 

Otherwise, you can have a situation where the HSF is locked in position with a gap between it and the core. The thickness of the missing IHS must be compenstated for.

 

Generally, the peg removal will not cause issues when going back to IHS use, it will only increase the clamping force the HSF would have on a IHS equipped CPU used after modifying the bracket.

 

Not an issue generally with screw-on HSF's where the bracket is removed though.
