It turns on but goes nowhere. Is my memory dead!?

Recommended Posts

I just got a set of Gskill 2gb DDR500 yesterday.

I was setting timings in A64Tweaker, and I clicked set and it froze. Not out of the ordinary.

So I restarted.

And it just didn't boot... like it shows Opteron 165 but nothing after that, no memory check or anything.

Reset CMOS... same thing, I think, I just see the Lanparty logo.

Remove battery, switch DIMMS, reset CMOS... still just sits there.

Only one red LED lit up. It's like it just won't move.

...inserting one DIMM only in the bottom slot (either DIMM) gives 3LEDs = memory.

...DIMMS in yellow slots still just sits there.

Did the memory die ALREADY, or what!? All I did was change max async to 9ns and it froze and I restarted as I always do.

anyway what happens is:

4 LEDs

3 LEDs

2 LEDs

1 LED

Opteron 165, 2 CPUs

<<< NOTHING >>>

im going to try clearing CMOS for a little longer but yeah i cant imagine any damage i just have never seen anything like this

thanks for the help ill get going on it... is removing the battery really necessary since moving the jumper effectively disables it?

Hi Andrew,

Clearing cmos is a bit like jump starting a car, doesn't always work 1st time.

is removing the battery really necessary since moving the jumper effectively disables it?
Never did myself on any previos mobos, have done it both ways with current. but if u tried & it didn't work - well then i take it out.

luck :)

If cmos or bios is corrupt u usually get no screen image ^& fans turning a fraction only then nothing.

4 LEDs on = Power applied

3 LEDs on = CPU has been detected OK

2 LEDs on = RAM has been detected OK

1 LED on = VGA has been detected OK

0 LEDs on = System has booted to the Operating System.

As long as you are in the BIOS including running memtest from the BIOS option, there will be one LED on.

If you are getting 3 LEDs on, it means the rig is having trouble detecting the RAM.

same thing after a 15min+ clear...

i tried each stick in the far orange slot, same thing, and i doubt the same damage happened to each stick, so it looks like the board or something.

is it possible to flash the BIOS through CD if i cannot even get it to post like this!?

if it won't post - no.

Not sure - it may be worth trying your Tagan in single rail mode.
