New RAPTOR 150 RAID 0 Major Problem... Need assistance

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I will try to make my problem as clear as possible.. If you have question please feel free to ask.

I just received today my 2 new raptor 150gb. I use them to replace my old raptor 74gb that I had in raid 0 wich never had any problems.

I unplugged my 2 raptors 74gb and replaced them with the 2 new raptor 150gb in my pc. I kept the same sata cables and used the same ports wich are on the NF4 controller and I have the latest official 623 bios

Boot my pc went in the NF4 raid controller version 4.84 and both drives are well detected. Then I setup my raid array (this is not the first time I did this... got raptors 36, 74 and now 150 in raid so I know how this works). I put it on stripping mode, then set the drives to boot then save and exit. Now the raid bios sees my array as a full 300gb disk.

Then I start installing windows wich has sp2 integrated. I press F6 at start. Then I load the 2 drivers for the sata raid. Then comes the hard part. After the 2 drivers load from the floppy, windows continues to load files and then right before that section finishes (before I get to the liscence aggrement and the page where you can partition youre drives and format) I get a BSOD telling me to make a chckdisk or that I may have a virus or something. Thats each and everytime.

After this I told myself this looks to be a driver conflict or something. I tried at least 4 different version of nf4 raid like the latest found in 6.70 the 6.53 and even the one I had on my original DFI cd that came with my board. Each time I had the exact same message BSOD.

Then after I tried a different floppy and a different floppy drive with the same result.

After this I disable raid in the bios and just tried to install windows on 1 drive. I did that with no hassle at all. Windows installed like a charm.

Then as my final test I told myself, uhmm I havnt installed windows in like 6 months at least. Lets try installing windows in raid with my old raptor 74. I plugged by my old raptors 74 in raid 0 using the same floppy raid drivers I had. And as you may guessed it, windows installed the raid without any problems at all. No BSOD. So my original hardware is not the problem.

So after all this testing I am asking myself what can be the probem. I am guessing its a controller/driver problem with the new raptors or something.

What do you guys think???

Any comment would be really appreciated

Thanks for youre time

are you trying at stock speed or overclocked?

also, have you formatted the drives or are they still very brand new and never touched?

have you tried the mfg's drive utility?

have you thought maybe you just got a defective drive(s) since the other drives work?

HI,

At first I tried overclocked, then after seeing the problems I went back to stock speeds.

I have full formated the drives where I work prior to setting them up in me pc.

I dont know what MFG drive utility is.

I dont think I have bad drives since prior to installing them in my pc. I plugged them in a ICH6R Intel raid controller on a p5gd1 at my job wich had windows on a PATA disk and put them in raid 0 and tested out hdtach and it was giving me 150mb/s avg. (sorry forgot to mention this) And like I said I have installed windows on 1 drive without any problems.

The problem occurs when I load the raid drivers, then windows continue the setup files and then right before it detects youre drives capacity bam a BSOD.

Haven't played with the new raptors yet - but I'm suspecting NCQ... (The new 150's are true sata not pata to sata converted like the 74's) I know you can disable command queing in windows but I'm not sure if/how you can in bios. Anyways, guts tell me it's an issue with NCQ support... see how you go.

Cheers, Chiller....

Hi,

Ok I did something new this morning. I plugged in 4 of my raptors on the NF4 raid controller. I did 2 raid 0 array. One with the 74'S and one with the 150's. Now the good news is that this time I was able to get to the windows screen where I can partition my drives etc without BSOD on me. I saw my raptor 150 that were there and unpartitioned and unformated. Then I click to format them and this is what they say:

To install windows xp on the partition you selected setup must write some startup files to the following disk:

14186mb disk 0at ID 2 on bus 0 on nvraid (MBR)

However, this disk does not contain a windows xp compatible partition

To continue installing windows xp, return to the partition selection screen and create a windows xp compatible partition on the disk above. If there is no free space on the disk, delecte an existing partition, and then create a new one.

To return to the partition selection screen, press enter.

The 14186mb is my raptor 74 array so I dont know the relation. I mean why would windows need to write files to that array if I am installing windows on the raptors 150 array??

In order to get pass that message I had to create a partition on my raptor 74g array.

Then after clicking to install windows on partition C (raptor 250 raid). They ask me they will format partition D wich are the raptors 74g raid array.

At the moment its installing windows on the raptor 150 array.

I guess my problem is still no solved. I dont want to have raptors 74gb in my pc to install my raptor 150raid array everytime I want to install windows. Besides my raptor 74's are already sold.

Keep youre suggestions comming and thx

Ok windows installed without any problems on the raptor 150 raid array.

But the oddest thig happens. If I unplug my raptor 74 array I will get a disk boot failure and I cant boot into windows with my raptor 150.

The raptor 150 raid array is detected in my bios and is in the first boot device.

If I replug the raptor 74 array it loads xp without any problems. And I know I installed windows on the raptor 150 array.

Shows why you should only have the array you are installing to hooked up. Look on your 150gb array and I'll bet you have some boot files there. Install again with only the 300gb array attached.

Smells to me like a newer nvraid bios than 4.84 is needed if using true sata300/NCQ drives

in raid.

Is there a more recent nvraid bios that 4.84??

BTW those disks are not sata300 there are SATA 1.5gb/s. Just not to confuse anyone.

I tried installing windows right after I had installed it on the raptors 150 array and it did the BSOD again, of course the raptor 74 array was unplugged.
