What SLI-DR Expert brought and took away!

Recommended Posts

Well... Hope that I'm not raising hell. I'm just a little sad for what I've been going through for the last 35 days of wrestling with the Expert board. I know that whole buncha you guys are gonna jump on me for this, but well, I thought I should share.

I'm starting to grow scared of this board as days pass by. I've been a hardcore DFI fan since the earliest NFII hit the market and never bought anything else. I will stick with DFI regardless and I won't back out so don't get me wrong here. I'm also quite experienced when it comes to computers and overclocking; don't let my post count give you a different impression.

I am also aware of statements like "DFI does not officially support Opterons". I don't quite get the point here. If something is not supported then it should be clear to everyone. I have seen strong tones about "unsupported" PSUs (20pin), why double standard when it comes to Opterons? Either support it or pull the plug once and for all.

What SLI-DR brought me?

1. Better layout gave me a little more room in my already stuffed case. I have better airflow and I can use my PCI slots the way I want.

3. Runs at 1T with my four sticks (228MHz max stable)

2. Hmmm..... Can't recall!

What SLI-DR took away from me?

1. My first Expert died and took my Opteron 170 with it after a BSOD. When it happened it was running at stock speed with 1.425v VCore and 3.3v VDimm. I don't use Special VID FYI.

2. Every other boot is a BSOD. Fresh Winblows installation did not help.

3. Cold boot is a pain. I have to flip the switch on my PSU and then use the front button.

4. Every other cold boot results in a blank screen... system does not post.

5. I can not run my memory with timings that I used to run on my Ultra-D. Loosening up the timings did not help a whole lot... I'm having some data corruption and stability issues even when I let the board pick the timings. I'm down from 1.5-2-2-5 @275MHz to 2-2-2-5 262MHz.

6. I am not able to reach the same stable speeds on this board. I was able to run my dual core at 2.8 double Prime stable, but now I can't double Prime it at 2.6.

7. I'm having problems with nVidia RAID. Every few reboots it fails to find my array until I reboot it again.

I know that these problems might be happening only to me, but I had them with my RIP board as well.

Happy holidays,

Q.

I could be wrong here, but I believe it's not DFI's call. AMD doesn't allow them or any other non server motherboard to support Opteron's. It's AMD that states they don't support Opteron's on those motherboards, not DFI.

Well, DFI is the one that says it, but only because AMD doesn't allow them to support it. This make sense?

period

I and Rgone have made this statement many times

pretty clear if you ask me

I was not aware of that. Thanks for clearing this up. Guess AMD is worried about the popularity of Optys which is eating into their profit coming from other 939 procs.

Dont know why he keeps comming out with this phrase.

Opterons were fully supported on my Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI mobo, just check out their page on that board for proof:

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Suppo...A-K8NXP-SLI.htm

and now others are following suite, DFI expert boards have been supporting the optys for a couple of months now in a beta bios, ok so the bios isnt offical yet but thats because they have a few more issues to sort before they can make it official but they're supported.

AMD are not twats like Intel and have realised that people are buying up these cpu's like hot cakes, they are not going to hold you back with an unsupported cpu forever and dont have any choice but to let board manufacturers support them, ok they may loose a bit of money on the athlons but not alot, its only tech heads that are aware of otys, everyday customers would still buy athlons, and a way around that is to bring the athlons upto the same spec as the opty ie 1mb cache etc.

Come on angry do you work for DFI or not ?

I doubt AMD will ever let them be fully supported and as time goes on we will see if AMD is serious or not. But a few enthusiast don't really bother AMD as that is not where the money is. It is with the OEM's and their servers and mass market. We all may want Opty's but it does not look as if they will be around forever and is of course yet to be seen.

But it does appear that their are AMD sales and spokepersons making statements now that will be sorted in the sales chains as time goes on. But that be what it may what one thinks he wants and what he thinks he will get are not always the same. After all this is real life.

http://www.overclockers.com/tips00887/

And we have one group swearing off the beta bios as not warrantiable and use at your own risk and then we have the beta bios portraying DFI as supporting the Opteron. And whether Giga Byte supports the processor or not is surely not my problem. And if a beta DFI bios may offer support is not my problem. I make every effort that is known to me to never recommend a DFI beta bios simply to keep the user fully within warranty. Period. No other thing can be said.

You want to run an Opteron? I suggest you do it. If you have a problem I suggest you be prepared to sort it yourself. The various zones of DFI support have entirely different warranty agreements based on the countries they are sold in. There is NO way in the world a user in a European zone would be advised by myself to run a beta bios. They have tougher criteria to sweep the boards against.

So the hoopla and the hollering or cajoling and wishing can proceed as many will always do but myself I have to adhere to company policy as handed me. When that changes; I change as required. Until then I see nothing that says DFI officially supports Opterons and a beta bios can be withdrawn at any time and specifications are subject to change without notice as always.

So have fun and carry on as you will. Happy holidays to all.

RGone...

giga can do what giga wants

Opterons are not officially supported by DFI

period

end of story

I'm already growing tired of repeating this

thanks, but this thread is closed as the answer does not change no matter how upset you want to be, or how many loopholes you think you can find.

Opterons are not supported

please stop arguing about it already

thanks
