Maybe the x1800 is just hungry enough to use more than the X700 and push it over the edge? Just a suggestion, my x800 is very close to the chip-set fan also and I have no problems. Edit: Here's the Power Supply Recommendation list, and it does say that "DFI REQUIRES native 24-pin ATX molex & 480W for all the DFI N4 mobos." Whether that's your problem or not, I can't say, and I realize you don't want to go out and buy an expensive PSU just to see if that's the problem, just trying to think of things that could be problematic.
