Error Makes Some Icons Look Goofy

Recommended Posts

Windows Socket Error (11001), on API ASync Lookup

what the heck?

Over the last 2 weeks that error has been popping up every now and then. It doesn't pop up EVERYTIME I load AOL, just sometimes, and it doesn't pop up EVERYTIME I run I.E, just sometimes.

At first I was just getting errors, and the occasional weird icons. Now I get weird ICON's all the time, but not on the desktop.....just in my startmenu and quick launch icons on the bottom toolbar.

I haven't changed any of my video card settings, or any major computer settings for that matter, in months. I have, however, installed about 15 programs (and uninstalled about 10 of them) during the few weeks before the error first occured.

It's always the same error with the EXACT same message. It doesn't cause any programs to crash or anything, it just messes with my icons. They look discolored and not as detailed.

Once I get my new 50pack of CD-RW's in the mail I am going to backup, and reinstall everything, so I am sure that will get rid of the problem. But I sure would like to know what the fudge is causing it. Got any ideas? Thanks!

dang Trojans!!! Norton's a punk!!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for that link Bosco.

After reading that forum, I went to the suggested "moosoft.com" website and downloaded their trojan remover. I must say, THIS PROGRAM ROCKS! It detected/removed !3! Trojans that Nortons retarded . never saw! Heres what they were and where they were located.

Latinus

* c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msHtml.exe

BDE

* c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\bdeinstall.exe

* c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\chktrust.exe

Aristotles

* c:\mIRC\polaris\System\Remotes\modes.ini

I think the Latinus one was the one causing my trouble. I forgot to mention that latley ZoneAlarm has been detecting that "msHtml.exe" is trying to access the internet. Not knowing what that program was I NEVER let it access the internet of course, which I now see was a very good idea.

I've haven't used polaris for about 3-4 months, so that shows you how trojans can go undected for long periods of time, even w/ an antivirus running 24-7.

As far as the BDE trojan goes..... it beats me. I probably caught it off kazaa...either in some porn or warez :). I just have to bring up the phrase...."When you dance w/ the Devil, your gonna get burned".

In closing I STRONGLY suggest that you all goto http://www.moosoft.com and download their 30 day trial program, and in my opinion its worth registering this sucker! If I encounter anymore errors I will update this post, but I think my problem is solved.

Thanks again Bosco, that link was all I needed!

Ok, I don't get that msHtml.exe program trying to access the internet anymore. Everything on my computer seems to be working great....except for the fact that my startmenu and toolbar icons are still all wacked out.

Do you think some windows files might have been permantly corrupted? If so, which ones do you think they were. Or do you think the problem is something else all together.

It's not really a big problem, I don't think I have anymore trojans. I'll download another trojan detector and if it finds anything ill post results

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have to agree, "The Cleaner" from moosoft.com is the very best trojan remover in the world :)

I did a test a few months ago with this, and downloaded about 10 different trojans. I ran AVP anti virus and it only detected 7 of the 10 :/ I then ran the cleaner and it found the other 3 :)

These days, everyone needs, anti virus plus anti trojan software such as "The Cleaner" and it never hurts to have a good firewall :)
