ATI Radeon 8500 Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 I know that I need a RAID setup to run this but my dad and I are going to try to build a kind of music server to attach to a stereo and we are going to use wavs for uncompressed music and better quality, and so we obviously need huge amounts of hard drive space. I am using a motherboard with onboard RAID so that is not a problem, but how do you connect more than 2 IDE devices to a cable? I have dual cables so that is fine...Do I just connect multiple cables so that it multiplies out to 8 places for IDE devices (Using dual cables that have 2 dual cables attached to them and so on)? posey Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 No, thats not how it works. You can only have 2 devices per IDE channel (master & slave) Most raid cards have 2 IDE channels (4 devices) I think there is one ABIT board with Raid that has 4 channels (8 devices)

ATI Radeon 8500 Posted June 30, 2002 Posted June 30, 2002 I found a 36.4 GB one for $179, of course this was 7,200 rpm...Bosco had said that this mobo supported 16 IDE devices so wouldn't it be ready for all of the devices or is this with cards...the mobo is the Gigabyte 8IRXP or the Gigabyte 8IEXP? Bosco Posted June 30, 2002 Posted June 30, 2002 There is no cards on the board. It has 8 without raid 16 with raid. B)
ATI Radeon 8500 Posted June 30, 2002 Posted June 30, 2002 So if I add a RAID card I can run 16 IDE devices? That would be plenty.
