6800 Comparative?

They are very close in benchmarks that either card would do the job that you wanted to it to do. If it was up to me I would take the 6600Gt, now if you could unlock the 6800 and you knew that for a fact then that would be a different story :)

bosco, im gonna be really nice (only because you are an old timer like me :D )in saying you have no real clue about how the 6600gt performs against the 6800nu, the 6800nu is equal and usually better than the 6600gt, the 6600gt is equal and usually better than the x700, which makes the 6800nu quite a fair bit better than the x700 and WAY better than the x600

not to mention the 6 series cards do HDR, SM3.0, and have SLI capability, ati cant do all three, and they usually cost more

6800nu would be closest to the x800Pro in performance, forget paper , we dont theoretically play games

Who are you calling old :P

When you play on basic setting's they are pretty much the same, when you increase the setting's or increase the Resolution the 6800 will start to pull ahead.

As for me not knowing the difference I personally do know the difference and the way that you guys are trying to discribe the difference is wrong. The card does not blow it away completely like some believe. Yes it does beat it at higher settings and I would hope that it does for what they says it will do, but before people start saying this card kills this card and so I think people should start saying what they plan to run the game at, because a 6600GT VS my 7800GTX at 1024X768 I can not see anything different at all!!!!

This guy explains it best:

on low display resolutions like 800x600 with no eye-candy all cards perform about the same!!!

on medium resolutions like 1024x768 w/o AA and/or AF the 6800GT is mostly just a tad faster if any faster at all compared to both 6600GT and 6800NU... (6600GT has the "bad habit" of running sometimes just a bit faster then 6800NU in some games due to it's newer process & higher clocks)

on the same medium resolutions 1024x768 but with the recommended standard 4xAA and 8xAF (called Eye Candy!) the difference is somewhat there: 6600GT is slower by a few frames per second compared to 6800NU and for 6800NU to 6800GT more of the same thing. but in most games we're still talking about lot more than 60fps and definately playable by all.

on 1280x1024 resolution w/o eyecandy same as above.

here the world of difference start:

1280x1024 resolutions with eyecandy and

1600x1200 resolutions w/o and with eyecandy.

here the amount of memory plays a BIG part here, as the 6600GT has only 128MB (done on purpose by nvidia as a 256mb version of a 6600GT could outperform the more expensive $300msrp 6800NU screwing up the whole balance.) and 128MB is not sufficient for all high resolution textures and AA/AF Information to be locally stored. (understand why those "real" high end cards always have "fast" 256MB and a 256bit interface?)

so in all correctly done benchies all over the net you'll see 6600GT's hit a considerable performancewall

at 1280x1024 resolutions and higher with AA and AF on.

but for ppl running up to 17" monitors and 1280x1024limited LCD's having a 6600GT or a 6800Ultra won't make a "world" of difference as both cards consistently pump out enough FPS to make any game up till now enjoyable. of course the 6800Ultra is the better card, but your eyes cannot keep up compared with your wallet for most of us.

Needless to say the 6600GT is truly one of the best MAINSTREAM cards up till now.

same for the 6800GT being one of the best HIGH END cards for those ppl fortunate enough of having BIG expensve monitors/LCD's for those sweet 1600x1200+ resolutions.

I never said that the card was bad or anything i am just saying that it is not a killer by in anyway now if you take a 6800Ultra or a 7800GTX now those are killers but at the same time at low res they are still close..........

And as for the 6600GT VS x700 I will take a Hybrid X700 PRO over a 6600GT any day of the week :)

Man I hate long post

thats why i am selling my 6600gt, i have a 19" monitor and like to play 1280x1024 or higher, and running much AA kills it, even massively overclocked, so i am going for a 6800NU or a 6800GT

thanks, too late, bought a new XFX 6800GT off Newegg for $291 shipped, was an easy decision once XFX announced their own "Double Lifetime" warranty
