Various Video Game Stories from the Week of November 1, 2021

It is the end of the week again, and so it is time to go through the press releases that have arrived in my inbox. As it turns out, this week has been fairly light for video game news, but we do still have some to cover, starting with some from 1047 Games. The studio has shared some information for Splitgate's November update, which will include significant changes to creating custom games, including the ability to save the game mode to a file, for easy loading later. Selecting maps and current game modes will also be easier thanks to a UI change placing them into lists, instead of needing to cycle through each value. A more significant change, however, is the ability to configure the teams differently, making asymmetric custom games possible. For example, one team could have increased health but without the ability to create portals, while the other has less health, portals, and maybe heavier weaponry too.

Along with the update's announcement is also the news that November 30 is the final day of Season 0's battle pass. If there is any content you want from that, you have the remainder of this month to unlock it. Just because Season 0 is ending, does not mean we are reaching the 1.0 release of the game, as the new season starting December 1 will be a preseason refresh with new content and a new battle pass. Splitgate 1.0 is currently aiming for a 2022 release.

Devolver Digital was founded in 2009 and this week became a publicly traded company on AIM, a sub-market London Stock Exchange. While this is certainly a significant move from being a privately held company, the publisher's employees are still the majority owners. This change will bring in additional revenue for the company to continue doing what it does, and to enable partnerships it could not previously. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Devolver raised about $261 million when its stock went live and Sony Interactive Entertainment intends to make a 5% investment into the company. It will be interesting to see what all this will enable for the company that specializes in publishing indie titles, as now they will have more money to throw at the projects, and with this being Devolver Digital, I would not be surprised if they do, literally throw money at developers.

Next up is some news from Techland as it continues to share information on the upcoming Dying Light 2, this time with another episode of Dying 2 Know More with a special focus on the Lawan characters. Previously introduced along with the announcement of Rosario Dawson playing her, Lawan will be one of the major in-game characters players will interact with, and your decisions will impact hers as the story continues. Having survived in the City, Lawan has had to become strong and independent to survive, but is still haunted by her past, which is part of the character's complexity. She also has a special kill list and it would be best to keep playable character Aiden Caldwell off of it. As was revealed in a previous announcement, Lawan's quest for vengeance will be among what your decisions will affect.

Dying Light 2 is scheduled to release February 4, 2022 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and on the Nintendo Switch via the Cloud Version.

Rounding off the game news is an item from Ubisoft as Ghost Recon Breakpoint is free to play until November 7 on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Google Stadia. All of the base game will be accessible as well as the Operation Motherland update. With this update Karen Bowman, a friend of the Ghosts, arrives and is there to help turn the technology of Auroa over to the Outcasts under Harui Ito. The island has become the center of a global conflict over the technology, but the Outcasts are a neutral force and so may reduce the growing tensions, assuming the new enemies you encounter do not stop you.

In addition to the new story elements, the update also adds Conquest Mode to the game's story mode. This challenges players to conquer areas of Auroa by completely various destabilization missions, such as removing surveillance and reducing enemy presence, both of which impact the world around you.

Naturally any progress you make during the free weekend will carry over if you decide to purchase the full game.
