gebraset Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Anil Sabharwal, the Head of Google Photos, has recently announced that Picasa, a service from Google that allows users to easily manage, edit, and share photos, will be shutting down in the coming months. With Google launchings its Photos service, the company wants to focus all of its efforts on one service that is able to provides users with a wealth of functionality, on both mobile and desktop environments. The desktop application for Picasa will be the first piece of the service that is affected by the shut down, with development of the application stopping on March 15, 2016. Users will be able to utilize the software past that date, but will not receive any security or functionality updates to the program. Picasa Web Albums will also be affected by the business move, as beginning on May 1, 2016, users of Picasa will no longer be able to create, organize, or edit albums. Fortunately, users will still be able to view, download, or delete Picasa Web Albums, so some functionality will continue to remain. Google sincerely wants users to move onto its Photos service, which has been available for quite some time. The company has noted that current Picasa users will find that their photos and videos are already available within Google Photos, should they decide to move on from Picasa.
