potatochobit Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 hello anyone know of a great new-ish router that allows you to configure the VPN in the router settings? I plan to do some traveling and I want to bring my ROKU with me I don't want to flash any DD-WRT firmware or tomato I plan to leave the router with some relatives when I'm done so nothing techincally complicated
Waco Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 The easiest way to do this is DD-WRT, and it runs on super cheap routers and takes about 2 hours total from unboxing to totally done. So while you don't want to hear it, it is the best option IMO. Even if you leave it with relatives later, you just have to set it up for them and they'll never have to touch it again. potatochobit Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 yeah, the reason I don't like DD-WRT is because it always has compatibily problems with ATT Uverse. anytime the router is reset you can get DNS or IP address errors you have to make everything static, it is such a pain as the auto settings will not work consistently I am using a netgear WNR3500L with DD-WRT installed and it supports open VPN but the firmware was last updated in 2013 so it does not support VPN user name and passwords so if I am going to buy a new router, I guess I would want one that supports it natively. do you know of any good cheap router that supports a new build of DD-WRT? I was looking at a netgear nighthawk, this thing is like 200$ but it has some sort of build that supports VPN. my other option I just thought of, I can connect the roku to SHARE the laptops wifi and just run a normal VPN program on the laptop I dont know what is best. El_Capitan Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Just use dyndns or any other type of similar service (to get rid of your DNS or IP errors). Most have free services. Edited October 29, 2015 by El_Capitan
Nerm Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Actually Mikrotik would work great for this. You can get an RB750GL for around $50 and capabilities wise they can compete with an $800 Cisco enterprise class router. Really any non-consumer grade router would probably work for your needs. I used DD-WRT with Uverse for 2 years with zero issues. I'm now running DD-WRT with Comcast with zero issues.
potatochobit Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 it sounds easy enough, but it doesn't always work out that way I have used routers for years behind their gateway but this year I have had it start acting up even if you set the DNS manually and put the router in DMZ and the gateway into hybrid, the ATT gateway is known to reapply default settings without any notice. here is some info about it. anyway, I recently learned that OPENVPN has an ipad APP you can download, lmfao. Im going to try that and see how it works. I just need it to play netflix while traveling. if that nighthawk thing is on sale this blackfriday I may test one out too. Waco Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 It sounds easy because it is. I had the exact same setup that guy had and after setting it up I never touched it again.
