Looking for some advice

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to OC my AMD FX-6100, my graphics card, and my RAM. Anyone experienced with the Crosshair V Formula BIOS? Also, any recommendations for changes/upgrades/removals to my current build to better suit it for overclocking? (Not interested in water cooling.)

Default HAF 922 case fans (x2)

Upgrading in the next 4 days (waiting on shipment):

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018)

Fans: Scythe DFS123812-3000 "ULTRA KAZE" 120 x 38 mm (x3) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185054)

Note about the upgrade: the current CPU cooler obviously isn't cutting; you get what you pay for. I figured I'll give the NH-D14 a go. The reason I'm also buying three more Scythe fans is because I would like to experiment more with the airflow. (Two on the side, one of the bottom.) This would make front intake (case default fan; coolermaster), two top exhaust Scythe, one rear exhaust Scythe, two side intake Scythe, and one bottom exhaust/intake Scythe. I'm pretty sure having all of them in won't be doing me any good (excessive airflow) but I'm interested in trying regardless.

Future upgrades:

GPU: any recommendations? I don't want brand new, nor overly priced. I've already spent a fair share on this rig. :P

PSU: is this wattage fine for now, and will it still be good if I were to upgrade the GPU? I'm not noticing any underperformance with it currently.

Do you currently own everything listed??

Yes. I'm currently on the setup with the parts mentioned in the first half of the post. I'm waiting on the following items to arrive:

Upgrading in the next 4 days (waiting on shipment):

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO (http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835608018)

Fans: Scythe DFS123812-3000 "ULTRA KAZE" 120 x 38 mm (x3) (http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835185054)

Little bit more information: I'm generally running two virtual machines through VMWare (24/7), browsing the web, listening to music, and playing a game (LoL, GW2, LotRO). I'm currently unable to play GW2 due to it spiking my temperature unreasonably (which is why I'm going for the NH-D14). I'm not looking to OC my CPU massively as everything runs smoothly as of current, but I'm interested in OCing the RAM and GPU.

Also forgot to mention I run two monitors: 1680x1050 & 1440x900.

Looks solid, though I'm curious why you're running two 128GB solid states, RAID 0 or 1??

I'd start reading a guide like this one (though I personally cannot offer advice on bulldozers, though unless someone can confirm they overclock like an Athlon II, which I've worked with 2 before)

http://www.benchtec.co.uk/forums/threads/8797-Crosshair-V-Bulldozer-Overclocking-guide

What kinda budget would you have for the GPU since that one is lacking for decent gaming settings even at 1680x1050

RAID 0. I would have just got a bigger SSD, but I was interested in trying these two brands out and putting them up against each other with my own tests. The M4 gets great reviews for stability, whereas the Vertex has had a lot of reports of them dying.

I'll be taking a look at that thread once I get home for work (or if I get spare time at work :P). Thanks for the URL.

As for the GPU, I'd really rather not spend anymore than $200 on a graphics card. I'm not that huge of a gamer (I'm generally working) and only play the three games I listed above.
