Overclocking my Phenom II

Recommended Posts

For some reason I keep hitting a wall when overclocking my Phenom II.Here is a list of things i have been doing to make it work but hasn't helped, maybe some1 can help me make an addition lol.

Here is my specs:

Phenom II 805 x4 2.5Ghz 4mb Cache AM3 CPU

2x4 Gb Corsair DDR3 1333 Ram + 2x2 Gb Samsung DDR3 1333 Ram

Galaxy Nvidia GTX 460 Gfx

Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 Rev 2.2 ATX AM3 Motherboard

Cooler Master N520 HSF

Thermaltake Commander Case

Thermaltake 500w PSU

My cpu is not a BE so I can't up the multiplier only decrease it. Whenever I overclock I use the CPU clock/fsb to do it but whenever I get 288~295 FSB it wont post. I have a feeling it's the cpu. When I am overclocking the FSB I know it overclocks the Ram, HT, and NB so I keep the HT and NB as close as possible to 2ghz. I also keep All the ram timings set to DDR3 1333 spec and underclock the Ram Mhz so it doesn't go ever 667 Mhz after overclocking. My cpu has a 12.5x Multiplier I can get 3.4ghz Stable at 275~ fsb but if I cut down .5 multi so it is now 12x Multi and put fsb to 290~295 I would get 3.4 Ghz however it will not post. Can anybody think of a reason for this? I was hoping to reach 3.7 or even higher on this chip but a 1ghz Overclock isn't bad at all..

It may be the CPU or the set you have I think.

My X2 545 (locked multiplier and 3 GHz stock) in my good ol' M4A78, did get to 3975 MHz, but in my Crosshair V, I can't get past the 3900 MHz. It posts, but it isn't stable in prime95. I changed the NB frequency, turn off the Cool & quiet, downclocked my ram and it simply isn't stable.

I did unlock with the ROG to 3 cores, did get it to 3.7 GHz and can't get to 3.8 GHz. The problem becomes the same of the 2 cores at 3.9 GHz. In my case, this instability could be temperature, since it usually crashes about the 55º and giveing even more vcore doesn't solve the problem, by the contrary, it crashes even faster. I tried to lower the vcore, but it doesn't get better too.

I think it may be the limit of the CPU... but maybe someone with more experience may know a solution for it. :P

I would try if you have not already to increase thr cpu-northbrideg voltage and tue fsb and northbride voltage. One thing also is to increase the nb frequency to 2200-2400 so it can keep up with the cpu data throughput.

I know its a pain but would you mind posting your settings where it was stable vefore.

In terms of settings, here are mine at 3.7 GHz Stable:

I have been using the ram with 1t without problems at 1642 MHz with the CPU at 3.7 GHz.

I was overclocking a few hours ago and did get this settings to last for 5 minutes in Prime95 at 3.8 GHz: :P

Currently it's stable at 275Mhz FSB, 2.2Ghz NB 1.200v, 2.2Ghz HT, Cache Unlocked, 3.437Ghz 1.400v 12.5x CPU, 1:2 Ratio 550Mhz 8,8,8,20,27,2T 1.600v Ram.

I have used 2 motherboards with this CPU My first being a Biostar A780L3G.

Back when I first got this CPU I had to keep it's voltage at 1.470v~ because it wasn't stable at 3.55Ghz (Biostar A780L3G Motherboard). On both Board's Overclocks my CPU temp didn't go past 55~c even at full load in P95 Blend.

I did adjust the CPU-NB voltage to 1.350v but it didn't help... I couldn't even overclock the NB to 2.4Ghz before it was unstable on my old board and I'm not gonna try for a big NB overclock on my current board cuz of Gigabyte's half loose unfanattachable NB HS.

I think I got the 3.8 GHz finally stable.

I had an English test today and coming home, I stopped in a computer shop and bought another two fans. One was to just change the color of the front fan and the other for another top fan.

So right now, I have my CPU Cooler with two fans, one exhaust fan at the back and another two exhaust fans at the top.

So when I run the prime, the temperatures got stable around 52-53º and did last for about 15 minutes before I stop it. With only one fan at the top it was doing about 55-56º and blue screening.

Right now I am testing another ram settings, trying them at 1692 MHz. I got an error at prime, so I think it may be the ram, so I am running the memtest to see if they're Ok at this MHz.

I hope I get the ram settings fine, put the Cool & quiet ON, see if it is stable and finally be able to say that it's working at 3.8 GHz STABLE.

Edit: Still not stable. After a while it crashes, but maybe with some tweaking, I can get it stable. At least, it stays stable for more time.
