lozkane Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Guys, I need help getting me Q8200 and EP45t-DS3r out of the starting blocks. I've just picked up 2 x Mushkin 1600 12800 DDR3 and I can't get the CPU up to 400 MHz It either beeps like crazy - 8 short - and won't post, or hangs when windows is booting up, or just keeps rebooting when booting windows. I have a Scythe cooler on it so I don't think it should be overheating. ?? I've tried SPD at 4.00D, 2.00D - not stable with FSB400 or even 4.00B, MCH at 1.2V (doesn't seem to want to go higher), DRAM 1.6V Appreciate your help Loza Edited February 9, 2011 by lozkane
Alexandre Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Welcome to OCC mate! Does everything work well on stock settings with the new RAM? Edited February 9, 2011 by Alexandre
Alexandre Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) According to the manual: Q:What do the beeps emitted during the POST mean? A: The following Award BIOS beep code descriptions may help you identify possible computer problems. (For reference only.) 1 short: System boots successfully 2 short: CMOS setting error 1 long, 1 short: Memory or motherboard error 1 long, 2 short: Monitor or graphics card error 1 long, 3 short: Keyboard error 1 long, 9 short: BIOS ROM error Continuous long beeps: Graphics card not inserted properly Continuous short beeps: Power error Since it doesn't list 8 short beeps I would assume that it is signalling a power error. Make sure all the power plugs are in the right place and properly plugged in their sockets. What PSU do you have btw? broooooooce Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I just wanted to respond because "tweaking tantrum" is the absolutely perfect description of when I obsess on some small feature of my box and just go bozo on it. How awesome! And welcome to OCC!
lozkane Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 According to the manual: Since it doesn't list 8 short beeps I would assume that it is signalling a power error. Cripes, didn't even consult the manual to see what the beeps were about - what a slacker! Thanks Alexandre. Yes everything works ok on stock settings. It seems like almost any changes though will throw it into spasms. The PSU is a 650W thing - I don't actually recall the make but I did think it was a good quality unit at the time. I do have a GTX260 on board so that'll chew a few watts (up to200), a couple of hard drives, a PCIe USB3.0 card, couple of usb periperals.. Could I really be hitting the power limit just when booting up??? Oh one other thing, when I try to benchmark it with Sandra it always hangs during the power management tests. Running Win 7 btw and it's main function is audio recording on Pro Tools - hence the addition to tweaking ram and such.
lozkane Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 UPDATE: Tried again with one memory stick and this time set advanced timings (whatever they're called) to 150ns and 250 ns. Started up no probs. Just reinstalled 2nd memory stick and all looks A-OK at this stage. Seeing much improved ram performance in win7 but the hard drive's dragging the chain a bit - you know what that means! ;-)

Go oc'n +1, SSD is the way to go and a nice 128gb drive wouldn't break the bank while yielding a nice performance increase.

Yes I'm sold on SSD, although a mate just had one die after a week of operation! I'm not out of the woods yet with this beast. Amost any settings change and it loses the plot . Even though my ram's supposed to have 1.65V, I can only keep it running when set to 'Auto', which seems to default to 1.5V. I try 1.6V and get many beeps - power error - warning then it hangs before getting to bios. The power supply if a Titan 2.0 650W. Do I need to set other voltages as well. I think I can get MCH up a bit from stock 1.1V. btw, is there an easy way to capture my bios settings?
