Motherboard heatsinks

Recommended Posts

Where all can they be used? I was thinking of getting some along this line - Microcool MOSFET Heatinks, and put them on the MOSFETs. What about the other flat chips I see on the motherboard? Is it possible/worthwhile to add the heatsinks on to those?

Any tips/advice/comments are much appreciated! I did a search and found little...

You can put heat sinks on any area of the motherboard really, they are generally made for just the areas that can see increased voltages (PLL, MOSFETS, Northbridge, obviously RAM, CPU)

They are only really worthwhile if you do intensive overclocking, and need to get a couple more .01v's over the chipset to push your clocks a bit higher. I also see them on water cooled rigs that are (or are nearly) fan-less, and need to optimize the little bit of airflow that is there.

I could also imagine that they could lower your overall system temps by disbursing the heat on the mainboard better and making your airflow more efficient, but that is completely conjecture.

:withstupid: The components that need heatsinks usually have them and extras are only needed if you're an extreme overclocker. A quality CPU cooler with good case cooling is all that's usually needed.

Fair enough! Thanks for the info guys.
