Sinfulace12 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 (edited) Would like to overclock to 3.2 GHz + (as much as safely possible...hoping that 4 is easily doable but I won't push my luck; if 4 is doable please inform me of how to do it ) Im a big noob when it comes to this stuff so please explain carefully and step by step.. I will do my best >< Thank you in advanced I apreciate any effort given (shown in the thermal controller ambients 1 2 and 3) My current temp is 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit Roughly.. OR in C it is 28 Degrees It IS liquid cooled with the standard alienware auora thingy.. Or should I just go straight to the bios? Any reccomendations on settings from what ive given you here? Thanks again really apreciate the time either way Edited December 2, 2010 by Sinfulace12
JJRKOC Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 If your hardware supports the Intel ETU go ahead and give that a try to start out. Once you're more comfortable with the BIOS settings you can try changing the BIOS directly. Keep an eye on your CPU temps while you're overclocking. wevsspot Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Not sure about the Alienware BIOS, but overclocking the socket 1366 i7 920 is pretty much the same around the world. For a safe overclock you can shoot for 3.2Ghz easy. Enter your BIOS. Enable manual BCLK control Change the BCLK from [Auto] or [133] and change to [160] Change CPU Multiplier setting from Auto to [20] Disable Intel Turbo Mode Disable C1E and TM Protection Take CPU voltage control off Auto and change to 1.26v (assuming you have a D0 revision I7 920) Change memory multiplier to yield an effective memory frequency equal to or below the memory speed specified by your memory manufacturer Please post up the make and model of your memory or a cpuz screenshot and we can tell you what its supposed to be Save settings, exit and reboot. Use a template or post up .jpgs of your BIOS screens and we can walk you through it if the above doesn't work.

wevsspot Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 No problem. The i7 920 is usually pretty easy to get up to 3.2Ghz without a sweat. One question I didn't answer was temps. You are safe up to 70 - 75C under heavy load. I like to keep my threshold around 70C personally, but a few others are comfortable with a little higher temps.
