Yes, but the 5850 will be clocked down if I'm not mistaken.

i have seen the chart and it doesnt have 5830.... perhaps its old....thanks

Crossfire works but it'll be like having 2 5830 which is still better than a single 5850.

I was told on the HD5 series it doesn't downclock anymore. As in, the two cards work together as one big card but do not downclock(One just does more work, the better one). Someone needs to confirm this though?

Apparently in the ATI FAQ it states that hybrid crossfire doesn't downclock anything. Interesting ...

Hmmm....As was said, I know for a fact, that the 4xxx series cards downclocked for sure, no doubt, as just being bored I CF a 4830 and a 4870. It was just like playing with my 2 x 4830 setup I had. I also know that ATI made this fact very well known!

But, I have not seen a review or benchmark anywhere that proves that a "Same Series" "Different Card" Crossfire setup like a 5830 x 5880 or x 5870, will not downclock to the lesser card. I thought this was a well known fact in the ATI world. Nothing has ever been proven otherwise, as I have done a lot of research on this topic. Now, even though the CF setup with say a 5830 x 5850 will downclock to immitate 2 x 5830, you can OC the 5830 to match the 5850's stock clocks, and try to squeeze every bit of performance you can out of this type of setup. But 2 x 5850 will still always be able to OC more, so no matter what you can't get them to equal in the end by OCing!

 

Also, even though they are obviously CF capable, doesn't mean they will scale well together. Scaling is the most important aspect of CrossFiring! I wish my 5870 x 2 setup scaled the way my 5770's do, wow, that would be freaking awesome!

 

Also the other forum linked in this thread had it's last post 7 months ago, and ATI has been pretty steady with a driver update every month for awhile now, so, yo can't really trust a post commenting on a subject we are discussing today using ATI drivers from 7 months ago! We all know the history ATI has had with driver issues

 

But to the OP, YES, you can CF these 2 cards!

5830 has less shaers but it has a HIGHER clock than 5850. So much for downclocking.

 

Stick it in, bench it and let us know.

i crossfire 5850 and 5830 and here the results... on xp sp3 the 5830 is disable...!!!! and in windows 7 they are in crossfire but in games crashes... so i think that or the drivers are suck, or these cards are very diffrent to crossfire (shaders, megaherz, etc) perhaps i sell the one card...
