Soulicro Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hey everyone. I've never overclocked before, and I know there are guides abound so I wont be asking too much. My main question after looking around is, why is batch number so important? My 930 is batch #3952A521.. I've seen so many people obsessed over batches, I'm not exactly sure what it means. My 2nd question is, does the 930 OC the same as a 920? Meaning, will an i7 920 OC guide be relevant or is there a specific 930 guide? 3rd question, a little off topic - what cooler would you guys recommend? So far it seems I should either get the Ven X, the Megahalems, or the NH-D14 (I'm shooting for 3.8MHz). Thanks!
sdy284 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 2. the guides will be fine, the only difference will be your multiplier, but everything else you can follow 3. i'd go with the d14 my 920 @ 1.36v @ 100% load @ 4Ghz stays in the neighborhood of 65-

sdy284 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Multiplier is +1 and the Noctua D-14 is the best choice for overclocking on air. The less expensive Zalman CNPSxxx series are decent enough (I have the Zalman CNPS9700 NT), though will be in the 68-78C range on full load but 44-52C on 5-15% load (idle) using OCZ Freeze. wow & you have a lot lower volts than me too, just goes to show the balls of the d14
El_Capitan Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 wow & you have a lot lower volts than me too, just goes to show the balls of the d14 The d14 is also $45 more expensive, so it better be!
sdy284 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 The d14 is also $45 more expensive, so it better be! no kidding. The way I looked at it was that no matter what 1366 processor i upgrade too, that thing will handle it. So IMO it was worth my investment

So IMO it was worth my investment I was actually really tempted to buying the d14 from your other posts... but decided to start liquid cooling my main rig and see how that goes. If I don't like the hassle of it, I might just end up going with the d14.

I'll do it eventually tho

I'll do it eventually tho Yeah, I'm the same way, but I have 2 workstations (AMD Phenom II x3 720 BE's) that are overclocked to a stable 3.4 GHz with just the stock heatsink. My plan is to get a 6-core AMD CPU when it comes out, and am planning to sell my x3 720 BE and use the Zalman CNPS9700 NT on it for cooling. I'm also upgrading to the ASUS P6X58D (already have a buyer for my i7 920 d0 and my ASRock x58 Extreme, but not my ECS X58B-A), trying to prepare for a 6-core i7 sometime when prices are more affordable. Anyways, that leaves just 1 workstation overclocked with just the stock heatsink after all this is said and done. http://www.overclock.net/water-cooling/543...iftech-h2o.html $250 for the kit as opposed to $90 for the d14... will see how it goes. I could have gotten 3 d14's instead.
