Windows 7 takes around 15 - 20 minutes (yes, minutes!) instead of under a minute to get to the login screen. I gave up trying to get to the desktop after waiting another 20 minutes or so. The drive won't even boot to XP Professional x64 (I have a dual-boot setup) My system specs are in my signature. I tried using a different system (with different ram) and there was the same problem, so i guess that rules out the ram.... Disk space on the Windows 7 partition is about 2.5Gb and about 3gb on the XP partition... Woudln't have thought thats a problem though..., although my paging file is set to about 6 - 8gbs... If you're able, you might consider going drastic and try a reformat... I would agree.. Few things to look at, Bio's. Make sure the first Boot Device is the Harddrive with your OS on it. I would personally disable all other boot devices.. You can always change them back if you ever need to boot from them. I would also make sure that anything in the bio's that is onboard, that you are not using I would disable them. Onboard sound. Onboard Video, Onboard LAN.. etc.. I don't know if Hitachi makes a drive scanner to test to make sure the Drive is ok. You might want to look for one of them. I do believe you can find a program that will test any Hard drive. Back in the day I used to use a program called SiSoft Sandra. I am not positive if this program still exists or not. But we used to use it for all of our "burn-in" testing.. Harddrives, ram, cpu, etc. When you boot in to windows, go to start - run - type: "msconfig" Go to the Startup Tab. You can pretty much uncheck everything, Unless there is a program you want to always start up with windows. Under the Boot tab, you can change the "time out" timer from 30sec's to 5 seconds. You only have 2.5g on the partition for Win7, and 3gb on the XP partition? If this is true, that right there could very well be the issue. I'll leave it on whilst I'm on my PS3 or something... - Pretty sure I don't have any startup programs except Steam... - Yes, SiSoft Sandra does still exist - i use it occasionally... - To "Queenz", its actually full up with steams games, the QT 4.6 suite, and visual studio 2008 express!!....... Honestly!! - Might just try a reformat, though re-downloading over 100gb of games is gonna take aagggeeeessss!! my connection speed is only 460kb/s Damn Steam and its [relatively] cheap prices!! - I'll just stick with windows 7 - xp pro x64 was actually slower than xp home x86!!! cali101 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) Hmmm I'm gonna upgrade my netbook hdd from a Seagate Momentus 5400.5 160gb to a WD Scorpio Black 320gb... Which would be faster:- My 7k160 (IDE) hard drive, or my 5400.5 160gb (SATA). Isn't SATA faster than IDE.. I know i'm comparing a 7200rpm hdd against a 5400rpm hdd but the 5400.5 is actually pretty fast for a laptop hard drive and I know that the Momentus series is one of the fastest 2.5" h.d.d series (Though I think the scorpio black is faster)........ Psywar Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I would assume it would all vary due to access times n stuff. But I would assume the 5400 SATA Drive would be faster. SATA is anywhere from 1.6gb/s - 3gb/s IDE is 133MB/s So maybe even though it rotates faster, and may have a better acess time. I don't think the data transfer rate on the IDE would keep up with the slower SATA Harddrive. I could be wrong on this though, but in theory it makes sense.
