Computer won't boot

Recommended Posts

I have a computer problem. My DVD-RW kept rebooting, everytime I put in a CD or loaded Roxio. So I plugged in an old CD-RW drive, and it started making awful noises. I had to turn it off with the switch, but then it would not turn on. So the power supply was fried. I put in a different power supply, but it would not boot into Windows. At one point, I saw Windows XP come up, but it started cycling. The BIOS recognized the 2 hard drives, but I still had problems. I got a message about incompatible ATAPI drive, and invalid partition table. I tried another power supply, and the C drive made these awful clicking noises, even without the IDE attached, so I figured it was fried. But I put in another computer, and it's not making noise; I used R-studio, and I see all my files; it's scanning right now. The D drive is in another computer, working fine. So I'm wondering if the hard drive is messed up, or is it the mother board, perhaps the IDE ports got fried. Yet it boots from a CD just fine. The CMOS settings look ok, and I did some motherboard tests with a boot CD, and they passed. Your ideas are appreciated.

I'm getting a headache trying to comprehend what you've typed. Please try and be a little more descriptive, and I'll be glad to help you diagnose whatever issue(s) you seem to have. What exactly isn't functioning properly at this point?

It's hard to tell what's going on there from your discription.

By DVD rebooting do you mean that the drive isnt readind the cd/dvd or it kicks it back out? Or is your whole computer restarting when you put a disk in the drive?

One other thought, are these external drives? if not, you where not swaping the drives while the system is on where you?
