enrgizerbunny Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Once it starts smoking you may want to consider lowering your frequencies after purchasing a new card. >.<
Voltes_5 Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Your Black Edition is pretty good, I have the same exact card. One thing it hates is heat, if you are going to overclock it, do so moderately with the stock cooler. If you want to OC it for its potential high OC, then get an aftermarket cooler. To answer your question how to find out that you've driven it too much is to do benchmark testing. Try Furmark first, simple and easy. Also try ATI Tool, and run some 3DMark benches to it. I normally do 10 loops of 3DMark '01, '03, '05 and '06 straight none stop. If it passes all that then the first game I test it with is Crysis. I have found that even with all the benchies passes, it fails Crysis, so I use it as my personal way of finding out my overclock on my card if it is good or not. I lower the clock till I can play Crysis with no problems. That's my process of overclocking my card and finding its limits.... ccokeman Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Once you go to far on the core/ shaders the stability test will just lock up so you cannot recover without a reboot.

Voltes_5 Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 (edited) Here is a benchmark tested and Crysis/CrysisWarhead game on highest settings tested OC on my BE. Stock cooling, fan at 60% speed, temps while gaming is consistent 60-61. http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/5zp4b/ Now this overclock here is when I had it on watercooling, it had its own dedicated loop by itself so I was able to control the heat. It passed benchies and what not but would not play Crysis/Crysis Warhead on highest settings, I had to lower settings and even then, it would artifact. Any other games had no problems. http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/7vbbu/ Edited November 14, 2009 by Voltes_5
