Overclocking a 940 on biostar 790gx

First off, heres my system specs:

 

Amd phenom II am2+ 940 3.0ghz.

Corsair Hydro h50 w/ stock fan.

Biostar 790gx a2+

 

 

Heres the problem, i must be doing this wrong but every time i try just a simple multiplier and voltage bump, i get the BSOD.

(a side note: is AMD OverDrive good to use?)

anyway my temps are great, at idle they are 24 degrees and load at 39.

i tried to bump the multiplier up 2 values to take it to 3.2 ghz and vcore at 1.38 and it bsod.

from what ive read, i should be able to take it to 3.4 on stock volts (i know,every chip is different)

I know its not a temp. problem as i stated above. What else could it be? or am i doing it wrong

AMD Overdrive is good. Try using that to set your overclock in windows then stability test it.

you should overclock from bios and not use software if at all possible.

 

what ram is being used in this system?

 

 

have you tried just bumping up the multiplier and not the v-core?

 

should be able to bump the multiplier up by one and not need any voltage increase.

 

try to make the smallest increments as possible in both multiplier and v-core...

 

plus only mess with v-core when necessary, such as if system isn't stable after raising multiplier and then only raise it as much as necessary to reach stability (assuming there are no other variables interfering with the overclock) and test for stability with prime 95 or occt each time (this is trial and error).

 

 

so basically, the formula is to go into bios and raise the multiplier (on a chip with an unlocked multiplier such as an amd black edition cpu) and then boot into windows and test for stability with prime 95 or occt...

 

and then after verifying stability, restart and go back into bios and raise the multiplier again (smallest increments) and then boot back into windows and test for stability (if stability test fails, go back into bios and raise the v-core in small increments and then go back into windows and test for stability).

 

it's a long and trial and error process, but this is the best way to insure stability and success.

 

 

also make sure the amd cool and quiet feature is turned off, as well as spread spectrum (these should be found in bios) as they can interfere with overclocking results.

I couldn't change the NB multi and AMD Overdrive was the only way. It's great for trying your overclock settings as well. You can always go back and set it in the BIOS afterwards. If the settings fail the system will reboot using your safe BIOS settings and you can try again. It's very handy.
