SmokinU Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 So i am attempting my first overclock but I am running into soe issues. Any help would be great. Heres my info. I started up prime 95 and ran a blend test but about 30 secs into it my machine rebooted. Now cpuz shows me sitting at 2.4 ghz core speed a 12x multiplier and 200.1mhz bus speed. Any clue wth I should do lol. Also in the oc for noobs thread at overclock.net it said to make sure to change a setting not to reboot on error when running prime 95 but I do not see this setting
AIinc Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 4.2Ghz is to high of a clock with only 1.36v You took a swing for the fence on your first try! If your using the stock cpu cooler that came with your cpu, then be very careful! I wouldn't try OC'ing past 3.2GHz until your either on liquid cooling, or a high quality air cpu cooler! I'll let some other i7 owners here help you more!
SmokinU Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 lol. Yeah I swung and missed but oh well lol. I have a zalman cooler which is doing pretty well. Those settings where achieved by a couple of people so that is why I went ahead and tried it.
AIinc Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Man, for your first OC, thats just plain scary going from 2.66GHz to 4.2GHz!!! You definitely got brass! LOL Now lets get an i7 owner to come in here and help! Good luck! thats one nice looking system!!! Gonna be a screamer! Probably already is at stock speeds! SmokinU Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Well I had to chill it out a bit down to 3.8 and have slowing gotten to 3.997 but I need 4ghz lol. But anyway I believe I will have it down tonight. Just have to push vcore a little bit more. My big problem is with temps. Living in hawaii and my computer room is in the middle of the house and up stairs. (no Ac's here) So I doing this all in a room with temps around 88. But anywwho at 3.997 My temps highest reached 77c. I have the zalman cooler which is part of the problem right there. lol
SmokinU Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Hello again everyone. Well after several different configurations (most resulting in a bsod) I up'd my cpu core voltage to 30mv, and raised my IOH core voltage to 1.30. I did not like what I was seeing with the temps so I turned HT off but left the other settings on, ie virtulization and execute disable bit. I then took off the case window and put on the stock side panel that comes with the cosmos s. This panel has a 200mm (I think thats correct size). With the panel on (the plastic fan casing touches the zalman cpu cooler fins) my low idle temp dropped to 49c and so far while running prime95 my highest temp reached 74c (only 30 min of testing so far.) I will prob be ordering the Prolimatech Megahalem cooler along with diamond thermal paste, and a few more case fans. Hopefully this will help with the temps as there is not much I can do about Hawaii weather lol. (currently near 88f in computer room with 71% humidity). cpu-z is reporting I am at 4ghz so hopefully with any luck my prime test will go well. If not I guess I will drop back down to my 3.997ghz setting. I do have 1 question for you all though. real temp reports higher temps the the bios hardware monitor is that normal? BTW thanks everyone for the help
SmokinU Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Just a quick update. Prime95 going on 4 hours now so far so good. Knockin on wood.
KK_ Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 are you running the small FFT test? i would say 80C is alittle hot , but it should be fine if it stays under that. make sure you run Prime95 for a solid 12h for a basic test , 24h for full stability . there is also a guide on this site HERE . Please read it as it contains alot of information needed for a good overclock

The odd thing however is that bios hardware monitor shows lower idle temps that real temp reports lol. Go figure. My room temp is about 25c - 30c with 70% humidty (yes at 9:30pm lol)

Blend test isn't the best for testing , but im sure it will be fine
SmokinU Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) Ah so blend not the best? I thought it would be better since it does both but Im new to this lol. I dowloaded core temp and they are spot on what real temp says as well. Edited August 25, 2009 by SmokinU
KK_ Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 best bet its that temp is correct one then
