Having a problem logging on to Windows XP

Hi, I'm having a problem logging onto my PC. It will bootup to the welcome screen, then it says I have to activate XP before I can log in. I already activated it and have been using this PC for a couple of months now. Anyway, it asks if I would like to activate it now. If I click on yes, it goes to the activate screen and there it says "Windows has already been activated, click OK to exit". I click OK and it automatically logs off and returns to the welcome screen and tells me I have to active it. If I click NO, I don't want to activate it, it logs off and goes to the welcome screen and tells me I have to activate it.

This is a legal copy of Windows XP, I have the disc and I have the key. This problem occurred one day out of the blue. It worked fine for a half of day, then the plug was accidentally pulled out. When I plugged it back in and started it up, this happened. I don't want to reinstall, because then I will lose all of me files. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, I also tried "safe mode" but it still won't let me log on.
