Timmy94 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) Hey Guys I got my e8400 on the weekend, good chip, 39 C on idle, anyway, i have currently got 1GB of 667 RAM, to be upgraded to either 800 or 1066 once i get some more $$ and was wondering what the ideal overclock is for e8400's and what Mhz of RAM is right for oc'ing it. As i will be getting some RAM in a few weeks. Cheers Edited November 11, 2008 by Timmy94
damian Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Anything above 800MHz will do. With the E8400 relying on a high FSB that mean your ram will clock higher, which also means more stress. So I'd say maybe PC2 8000, or 1066 speeds.
Timmy94 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 so 800mhz will do the ideal overclock for e8400. and that ideal overclock is??
Turophiliac Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 so 800mhz will do the ideal overclock for e8400. and that ideal overclock is?? no... buy 1066MHz RAM it's also called pc 8500 RAM. there is no ideal overclock for the e8400, but extremely common is at least 3.6GHz, 3.8 will require a few motherboard tweaks, and past that, well, i don't have any info for past that. Timmy94 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 So 1066mhz is good, i will probably only go to 3.6, and if all is good then maybz 3.8, but 3.8 would be max. 9 x 422 = 3.798 won't 800mhz RAM overclock to 844mhz???
Turophiliac Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 won't 800mhz RAM overclock to 844mhz??? most likely, but if you could run faster ram for not a whole lot more money, why not? remember 1:1 isn't the only FSB ratio that is good. i've gotten my highest benchmarks with mine running the 10:13 ratio i am now... so yeah, 844 will work, but faster is always better. besides, if you really wanted, you could buy 1066MHz RAM and hand pick the freq that gives you the best performance, and stick with it, be it 844, 900, 1000, 1066, or whatever. Timmy94 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 your setup seems pretty good. what temps are you getting???
MINDSCI Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I think you might need DDR2 1066 to OC the E8400 to 3.8GHz. As FSB will be in the 417's+ or mid 400's if you lower the multiplier. I have my E8400 at 3.8GHz using Corsair Dominator 8500C5D DDR2 1066 RAM. I have also had this RAM very stable at 1167.
Turophiliac Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) your setup seems pretty good.what temps are you getting??? well, i live right close to the beach, (Pacific) so it gets pretty chilly here sometimes. but the highest load temp on CPU i've been able to get is 55C with 41/42C idle temps (it was pretty dang hot in the room then) and right now its about 45F outside, so my CPU is idling about 33C lol! I'd also like to add that in addition to the stock fans, i have an Ultra Kaze fan drawing air into my system from the front, right to the CPU heatsink, so that helps quite a bit with temps. I have also had this RAM very stable at 1167. lol yeah, pc8500 isn't known for its exceptional overclocking ability. i was actually surprised mine held up at 1100MHz, i wanted 1127, but it didnt want to go past 1100 Edited November 11, 2008 by turophiliac
Timmy94 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 so 1066 is good aye, much of an increase in speed over 800??
Turophiliac Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 yeah, you'll definitely notice an increase in speed over 800MHz, and especially over that 667 you've got in there now lol!
ocmooz Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) Here lemme give some specs since I haz a e8400: FSB- 478 CPU multi- 8 CPU freq- 3.84GHz cpu voltage- 1.36V Memory- OCZ reaper PC8500 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 oc- 1148MHz voltage- 2.3V timings-5-4-4-14 Technically I could have gotten similar results with either 800MHz or 1000MHz memory, but the timings would have suffered severely and hence the speed as well. It's up to you though, really the difference of having lower timings is slight at best, and it also depends on the mobo you're running. Anyway you go you can't lose because that 667MHz stuff is severely holding you back. Edited November 11, 2008 by ocmooz
