E6850 On Asus P5q-e With Si-128

Hi Guys!

I am running the Rig in sig.

My motherboard supports an FSB of up to 1600 (400)

My RAM supports a speed up to 1066 (533)

My CPU is a Intel E6850 (stock speed 3.0Ghz, 333 FSB) cooled by an Thermalright Si-128 with an Antec 120 mm fan on it, and a 120mm Antec fan right behind it blowing out.

The case has a mesh side panel, so cool air can come straight in. Room temprature is about 18 degrees C.

I have been trying to overclock my CPU today.

First of I tried simply setting the FSB to 400, seeing as both my board & ram support this default. So they would NOT even be OC'ed, and therefor limiting factors.

I left CPU volts @ Auto, which set it to 1.4v

It passed 3DM06, 3DM05, AquaMark 3 & Super Pi

I tried to run OCCT, and after about 3 mins, it cut out, saying CPU temp too high, and the CPU had hit 70 on both cores.

I then tried manual Voltages, and took it down to 1.35, this resulted in INSTANT fail on OCCT.

I then moved to 1.36, again FAIL

I moved all the way back up to 1.4, where it then again crashed due to heat.

I now have the chip back at default clocks, and volts (1.32) and ran OCCT, and its temp hit 60 Degrees C!!

How come this thing runs SOOOOOOOOO HOT? I have been reading reviews, and the Si-128 doesn't fall much short of the Ultra 120 Extreme (couple of C)

I am 100% its not my case, as I said, it has an OPEN side panel (just mesh) and there is an Antec TriCool fan on the heat sink, and another one right behind it on the case. Both can go up to 2000 RPM.

I tried it with both fans at max fan speed, and this didn't net much better temps, only a couple of degrees lower.

I just re-seated the heatsink with some fresh AS5, maybe that will help.

Does AS5 go off by chance, the stuff I have is about 1 yr old now.

Should I try using the stuff that comes with Thermalright coolers?

Please help! How can I get the temps down on this thing??

Thanks for reading!

When I had my chip on the EVGA 680i board they where similar.

Idel 28-33, load 55-60.

I am very confused.... the Si-128 is a huge cooler!

Have I just got a bad chip? Or a faulty cooler? Is that even possible?
