System shutdown

Recommended Posts

I built a system for a friend a few months ago for who is a big gamer. It seems like the system is shutting down frequently. It seems to happen when he is gaming and the system temps are up. I believe that the cpu and chipset temps stay at or below 50c. The only thing that is getting up there in temps is the 8800GTX and that is hitting high 70c and sometimes 80c. The only thing I was thinking was the cpu shutdown temp setting in the BIOS. At first, it was on 60c but I have raised it and it did not help. There are no system monitoring software installed. Maybe it is a power issue? I am not too sure. The 8800GTX seems to be within its temperture threshold but can the card overheating cause a system shutdown? Any ideas of what might be causing this? Thanks

Have you reviewed the logs in event viewer? Anything of note in there?

80C isn't excessive for the 8800GTX, so I don't believe it is a heat issue with the video card causing the shutdown.

Have you ran Orthos with CoreTemp logging in the background to confirm there isn't a heat problem with the cores when the system shuts down?

Is the system at stock clocks or is it overclocked? (video card or motherboard/memory/cpu)

If heat isn't an issue my first guess would be a power supply issue, but man that PC&C is a solid unit and I think it should handle that system just fine.

Have you tried it with just 1 or 2 sticks of RAM? run memtest on them? perhaps one of them is bad

the 80C on the 8800GTX really isn't anything to be concerned about; mine idled at 70C until I put them under water.
