what's the new toaster?

hey guys, remember when everyone here had a 'toaster'? heh... before the 64 bit procs came around. it had amazing overclocking abilities and was very fun to toy with.

well, my toaster just died unfortunately. my water cooling system went to 0% flow for a while and, well, my toaster is toast (note to self, maintain water cooling system regularly, debris can get stuck in hidden areas). was wanting to build a new pc, and i see that there seems to be a lot of great choices with intel and amd right now. i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (processor/ram/mobo wise) of what i should go for to attain a modern day toaster so to speak.

btw, if anyone has a cheap amd socket a processor i can buy to get this rig back up and running i might be interested.

well, thanks in advance for any help or advice you guys might have :D

well, I got a cheapo socket A cpu in my for sale thread, I think I want $20 + $5 for shipping (1600+).

as for whats new...

here's my best bang for the buck for both intel and amd:

Intel E2140 Allendale 1.6Ghz

Just about any $100 965/975/P35 motherboard (I like Gigabyte the most!)

2x1GB DDR2-800 OCZ CAS4 @ $66.99 after rebate

for AMD

AMD AM2 4200+ X2 dual core

just about any AM2 motherboard honestly...

those same OCZ DDR2 modules I listed above

can't really go wrong...except you'll also need a decent psu, and of course a PCI-E graphics card...

thanks for the prompt response man. both look really nice. think i'm leaning towards amd, that proc you linked looks sweet.

fortunately i recently bought a really sweet ocz psu so i don't think i'll need to purchase a new psu for my new rig. are the processors you linked good overclockers? btw i only want a proc for my old rig so i can have 2 pc's, it's run its course methinks heh time for a new pc :P

hey thanks a ton for your input guys. i think i've already decided on that amd proc. man, didn't realize how much it'd be... even for a cheapish build i'm looking at $500 already using parts from my old rig. better to shell it out than to always have something i don't want though heh

i use my pc for gaming.... well, playing wow mostly i hate to admit haha. doesn't take a killer system to run the game but i play fps's too. i'm not super hard core, but i like to be able run any of the new games on fairly demanding settings.

right now my build looks like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813128014

will replace the vid card later when i get the money, for now i want something that works well enough to let me bask in my gaming delight lol. might just get another eventually and do sli, i'm really not sure.

i'm up for any suggestions at all. i hope that my choices have been wise. my psu as i said before i can use from my current rig (i'm gonna get my broken rig up and running again too, but still building a new one).

also in a bit of a rush, so not gonna get real picky with this build. i dont want that to cause me to get something i don't want, but i'm hoping to get this ordered by tomorrow if possible.

this mobo has caught my eye, a little curious why the price is so low though... makes me think there is something wrong with it lol.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813136015

the customer reviews indicates that certain procs it wont post with until a bios update is made. you know if that applies to the processor i'm going to be getting? i've not been keeping up with the procs since 64bit first came out.. i'll be honest, dual core cpu's confuse me lol.

the reason i like it is mostly due to 3 pci slots and 2 ide connectors. dunno what's up with the new mobos wanting to put everything on board. i will need atleast 2 pci slots just for my sound card and video capture card. these aren't essentials though. anyone have any further input on the mobos? dunno if this is a touchy subject, but noticed the forums name changed... has there been a falling out between dfi and these forums?

alright, i've changed my mind on the mobo again. that infinity doesn't seem like a good performer at all from what little i've seen. i also have gone with zipzoomfly because i have to pay tax with newegg (bah!). am sticking with them on the case though, that case looks like a sweet deal.

anyway, here goes:

i'm certain i am satisfied with the processor and ram, but the motherboard and video card i'm still a little eh about. anyone happen to know if the 8600gt out performs the 6800ultra by chance? i've been very unsuccessful in finding benchmarks that directly compare the 2... generally only compare to like the ati counter part, not really as interesting to me.

that motherboard is better than the NF590 SLI in my opinion (Rgone's opinion too). Momma still uses it with a 4800+ X2 & X1900XT w/2GB OCZ DDR2-800 and nothing is overclocked and she plays the crap out of games like RS Vegas, NWN2, Titan Quest, UT2004, etc.

There's nothing wrong with that board. You should get it if you don't need SLI as the price is very very good.

if you are looking for a vid card, go with one of these:

7900GT

7950GT

7900GTX

X1900XT

X1950XT

8800GTS 320MB

any one of those will rock ya for a good while if you are a WoW player.

The cheaper DFI is a great mobo dispite the low cost. For AM2 it would be on the top of my list.

Personaly I would get an allendale and a Abit IP35 (was 75 after rebate) OCZ ram and a 8800 320MB or 1950XT. On a budget the 1950XT should be on the top of your list it is well worth the extra money over the GT. the 8600GTX wasnt bad at low res it can play fear with the video memory overclocked at 1100x700 well but laggs with more normal screen res.

The video card is the most important part for video game performance though.
