Need help on selecting OS

I'm trying to locally sell my 1 year old PC that I built myself (AMD 2800+ Sempron 754, Biostar TForce 6100-socket 754, 1 Gig RAM, 120 Gig IDE HD).

I'm trying to find the cheapest way to sell it, but I really need an OS on it since I'm having no luck selling it without one. It doesen't need to be all that flashy (probably not Vista), but does anyone know a cheap place to get a good OS like XP of some kind? I'm having a hard time with Ebay since I'm not too sure if these are "legal" or not (my current XP isn't ......exactly .....legal).

Download Ubuntu (oo boon to) Edgy Eft 6.10 (Linux). You will want to use the 32-bit desktop version.

It takes a minimum of 256MB of RAM, however. So, if you don't have that much, then find another Linux version that requires less.

There are many good versions available and they are FREE!

www.academicsuperstore.com has a lot of cheap software (and operating systems)

I've got nothing against Linux but in this case the person buying the PC will probably have no experience with Linux but a ton with Windows.

Another thing, though, is that I've found it's more profitable to part out a machine versus selling it as a whole.

Just a thought.

Thanx guys, I already installed Ubuntu. For the price, it can't be beat. I think I may play around with it for a while now before I sell my PC.

Edit: David, you're prolly right though, I think the end buyer will prefer Windows which is too bad. If I can get the PC working right with Ubuntu I may become a fulll fledged Linux fan since I hate big corporations that overprice their software. And right again, I'll prolly have better luck parting out my system. I wonder how much I could get for my 2 GB GSkill HZ sticks these days?
