I am not having much luck overclocking my (CCBWE) chip this must not be a good steping now that it looks like newegg.com is selling (CCBBE) chips for only 159$ with my setup is it worth it to get a new chip?

(My 3700+ can do almost 3.0Ghz with the setup i have)

Heh, I bought my 165 last Friday simply cause I see that they have a ton of CCBBE chips they're pushing out...

CCBWE's are generally regarded to be poor overclockers anyway. If you are compelled, I would say go for it.

Is your RAM PC4000? I forget.. I think it's PC3200. If it's PC3200, get the 170 or above.. but of course you already know that..appears that the egg is pushing out CCBBEs of the 170s.. last I saw it was CCBBE 0615DPMW. Might have changed by now.

If you wanna hit 3.0GHz+ cancel that order on the opty 170 and get one of those CCBBE's chips newegg is pushing out..

I haven't seen many opty 170s go over 2.8GHz. you will have better luck with an opty 165 CCBBE 06* stepping as most those are great overclockers,.. Tip* just don't accept the package from newegg and they will just refund your money.

well, since you have pc3200 RAM, it would be recommended that you stick with the 170.. generally a lot of people here at the forums will tell you to use pc4000 RAM with the 165, since it has a multiplier of 9 and is said to not like dividers. since the 170 has a multiplier of 10, it should work better with lower speed (like in your case) RAM. of course, it is entirely up to you whether or not you want to keep or refuse the 170, it's just advice on behalf of me.

personally, i picked the 165 because i have capable PC4000 RAM, and I just wanted to save an extra $25 on something better (like a new heatsink/fan for my x1900). all up to you.

  • 4 weeks later...

I too bought a 165 from newegg because of the ccbbe buzz. The one I recieved was the dreaded 165 CCBWE 0551vpmw which came from the CA warehouse. I didn't even open the package and requested an RMA for an exchange which is one the of main reasons I buy from newegg. They want to make you happy. The exchange cpu was an excellent ccbbe 0617fpmw from the NJ warehouse. Many have hit 3Ghz with this chip. I have to wait a few days till X-mas to give the chip a try at an OC.
