Gipse Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Hi, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Kubuntu on my laptop. Everything went fine (codecs, sound, dvd, updates etc.). I tried to install the ATI diver for my card (Radeon 9000 mobility) following this guide: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Da...tallation_Guide Bad idea  After reboot I can not enter Kubuntu anymore; it will stop before I can enter my password. Any ideas how to solve this problem without a new install? Thanks for your help! Gipse
Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Have you tried to login as root? Or do you not even get that far?
Gipse Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Or do you not even get that far? That is my problem... I will not see the log-in screen. I can boot in safe mode, but I do not have the skills to operate from there (console). I need urgent help. Gipse
Anakin_hollan Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Maybe this is an issue: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=8126.0 Just make sure your 'xserver-xorg-core' version is 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4 (or higher) before you reboot and you should be fine. Greetz!
Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 You may have had a serious conflict with the driver, so your task will be to uninstall the driver as a starting point. If you can get into safe mode, that's good. This guide to installing/uninstalling drivers from the Ubuntu site should help: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidi...ROM_METHOD_2.29 Just follow the instructions regarding the KDE environment. It's addressed towards the Nvidia drivers but the basic process is still the same for ATI. Hope this helps
Gipse Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Cuttlefish1212 Thanks for that post, i am back on Kubuntu desktop! You saved my day, thanks again! Can you tell me a safe way how to install the ATI driver or is that not a must for that vid card? Gipse
Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I'm glad it worked mate Yeah, you need the driver in order to use the video card effectively. First off, is that ATI driver compatible with Linux? If not, make sure to get the driver that works with Linux. If it is the proper driver for Linux, you may want to see if there is an updated driver that won't cause this problem.
Gipse Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 There is a driver form ATI, but I have no idea if it supports my mobility card. https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...dge&folderID=27 Any info about hoe to install that driver in a safe way? Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Well, just looking at the ATI website...there is an appropriate Linux driver for your card: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...dge&folderID=27 This is version 8.28.8. It's supports the ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 for notebooks running a 32-bit Linux OS. You may have installed version 8.29.6 which no longer supports your particular card. I suggest reading the installer instructions to make sure this is the correct driver. Also, I'm assuming you are running the 32-bit Linux? EDIT: Crap...stupid website...didn't get the link. Just click on "Linux display drivers and software", then "Notebooks with ATI Graphics" under the Linux x86 menu, then click on the Linux proprietary x86 display driver link, then select the "driver version 8.28.8" link. That should get you where you need to be
Gipse Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Ok, I found this driver and will try to install it after downloading the file. Will report back too... Gipse edit: Yes, i am using 32-bit install
Gipse Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I tried to install this driver, no go... I do not know why, but I can not log-in as su in the console. This is the error message: "su: Authentication failure Sorry." Yes, the password is correct. I can use apt with this password. Any ideas? Gipse Does kubuntu do the software installer? http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/ Load up Synaptic above, edit your repositories and search for ATI.
