Noob overclocking questions

Hello all,

 

As the subject says, I'm new to overclocking and I have a few questions. I've just installed a G3258, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3, and Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400. I've been following a post on here on how to overclock the G3258 and have got a overclock at 4.4 Ghz running Prime95 blend test right now. I'm using HWinfo to monitor voltages and temperatures and I've noticed that core #0 temp fluctuates anywhere from 3-6 degrees while running. Is that normal, or should I be concerned? Core #1 only fluctuates 1-2 degrees. I know the temp is going to fluctuate some, but don't know if that is excessive.

 

I was also wondering if someone could recommend a thermal paste. It's been about 10 years since I built a PC, so I'm not sure which one to use.

You'll sometimes encounter a core that runs a bit hotter than the others, so it's nothing to worry about with that. That core is likely the one running single-threaded apps, so that's why it'll be hotter than the other(s).

 

As for the thermal paste, I think I'm running the kind from Noctua now. Or maybe Cooler Master. One or the other, both work pretty well since I've used both in the past and didn't notice much of a difference.

I use Antec Diamond 7 just because A) its always available at Stables so when I run out I don't have to wait 2 days and B) It's matches other brands like Noctua.

 

My List:

Arctic Silver 5 (Cheap and very good, but conductive so don't make a mess)

Antec Diamond 7 (Expensive but non-conductive)

Noctua (Not sure the brand version, they are all good)
