bp9801 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 What kind of games will you be playing? What resolution? What settings? Budget?
Waco Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Define "low profile". Do you mean half height cards? ITX form factor?
uneedav8 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 What kind of games will you be playing? What resolution? What settings? Budget? I am playing the games on a TV at 1920x1080, medium to high settings, I'd like to keep it under $250 Define "low profile". Do you mean half height cards? ITX form factor? I built a Steam box using a Dell Optiplex small form factor case, right now I have a full size GTX 650 card sticking out the side (with no case door on) looking Frankenstein. I'm not sure if there are cards that are smaller in width, you should have gone for an APU if you wanted a steam box with that size of case. bp9801 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Might be one of your only options.
Braegnok Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 (edited) You could look into building a cheep DIY eGPU for a bit more graphics power on your Dell OptiPlex SFF,.. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/diy-egpu-experiences.418851/##introduction The small form factor cards work fine for streaming video or web browsing,.. not for gaming. WarWeeny Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Might be one of your only options. He asked for a gaming card though Well for post 2012 games, on medium/high should be fine, if he likes to play at 720P 30fps. Aren't there any new APUs that perform better than that card? I'd imagine AMD would release one by now, the last one was from 2014, if i am not mistaken.

He asked for a low profile card, I showed him a low profile card. You're not going to be running anything like a 980 Ti in a small form factor case because the width can't handle anything remotely close to a full-size video card. Neither can the power supply in most instances. An SFF case, especially one of the Optiplex ones, simply isn't designed to be a gaming powerhouse unless you heavily modify it or are running a CPU with a good IGP (or jerry rig a laptop motherboard and GTX 980M into one). You're suggesting an entirely new build, depending on what the rest of the components are in the system. If he's on Intel and has an LGA1150 motherboard, he may as well just get a Broadwell processor with the Iris Pro and stick with that. On AMD, most of the IGPs on the APUs are pretty stout, but dunno how it'd compare to Broadwell's Iris Pro.
cchalogamer Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) Off the top of my head a 750 Ti might be your best bet. It'll run a LOT better than an R7 250 (ballpark of a 260X for performance in most modern games giving you 1080p 60 with medium to high settings on most newer game, exceptions being ones that are just terribly optimized for even high end hardware. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127836 I don't know why it seems none of these cards actually come with the proper brackets to makes them fit, but you can do with out it in most cases or order one with the card here's some options both bare ports only and with the extra VGA options too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=DVI+%2B+HDMI+Low+Profile+Bracket&N=-1&isNodeId=1 As a side note that was off really just off the top of my head and someone may have put out something better by now and there may be cheaper low profile 750 Ti options as that was literally the first search result. bp9801 Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Until there's a GTX 950 Ti or some such, there probably won't be any other decent low profile cards besides the GTX 750 Ti or the R7 250. There are other ones, GT 730s and older on both AMD and NVIDIA, if you don't need the performance. AMD does have the R7 360 that should have low profile options, but for whatever reason none are available yet.
